To dominate the lacrosse field as a goalie you need supreme reaction skills and be able to move quick in a tight area. It’s one of the hardest positions in all of sports and It’s a very specialized position that a person actually has to play to understand how to coach it. But from my experience of both playing (15+ years) and coaching I have picked which drills are most beneficial and easy to learn. I always start my goalies with warming up the legs with footwork drills that will help them improve lateral explosiveness and quicker feet. Then move onto 10-15 min warm up where I shoot on them at varyious speeds and locations. From here I can analyze what a player needs the most work at. Everybody has different strengths and weaknesses so the practice plan can vary from person to person. I also have equipment to help improve stength of my athletes. This includes Resistance band loops, leg weights/wrist weights, weighted lacrosse shafts, footwork hoops, ladder and the list is growing. Not only do I work on footwork, strength training and reaction speed but I will also make sure he\she can communicate properly on the field. Goalie communication and leadership is one of the most underrated attributes someone can have but can take your game to the next level.
