More About Coach Cage
I have been a pitching coach at the junior college level (City College of San Francisco). I also am the pitching coach for a youth travel ball academy, the SF Seagulls. I give private pitching lessons to clients on the side. I have also interned at Flagship Athletic Performance and am working on getting my Strength & Conditioning Certificate.
I have 5 years of collegiate baseball experience both in Junior College and at the University (NAIA) level. The junior college was Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz, and the 4-year was Avila University in Kansas City (both high quality programs) I have played two years in independent professional baseball (Pacific Association) and am training for a third season of professional baseball.
Pitching clients can expect to work a lot on their pitching mechanics and improving their velocity/command/pitch quality. I teach loading the hips, driving the back leg, hip to shoulder separation, and proper arm action. Depending on the type of athlete I am working with, I may focus on developing their mobility, strength, speed, or really work on their coordination and skill movements. I always start with a dynamic warm up, then catchplay/long toss, then go to work on their mechanics. I am a big fan of using the Diamond Kinetics Pitch Tracker for bullpens, which offers immediate feedback on pitch velocity, spin rate, spin axis and more. After this is done, we generally do whatever type of conditioning is most necessary for the athlete. We will also discuss game situations, how to utilize pitches to get hitters out, fielding, pickoff moves etc.
