More About Coach Brandon

My background as an independent private trainer is rooted in proven competitive success and a deep, technical understanding of the goalie position. As a former All-District Goalie, I am largely self-taught, which forced me to meticulously study game film, analyze mechanics, and dissect the position independently to reach an elite level. This unique background allows me to diagnose a player’s mechanical flaws quickly and explain the "why" behind every movement in a way that traditional team coaches often miss.

I operate independently, working directly with families at local community fields to tailor every training program specifically to the individual athlete's needs. I have experience providing 1-on-1 private training, running small-group position clinics, and delivering peer-to-peer mentoring. I typically work with all athletes ranging from ages 8+. While I do not hold a formal commercial coaching certification, my training relies on firsthand mastery of the position and a focus on the core pillars of goalkeeping: positional awareness, footwork, reaction time, and the mental resilience required to anchor a defense.

I competed at the varsity high school level, where I was recognized as an All-District goalie. While I did not pursue collegiate or professional play, my most significant athletic accomplishment was reaching that elite tier of competition as a self-taught athlete. Without the benefit of private coaching during my own development, I had to independently analyze the game, master the complex mechanics of the position, and out-work heavily coached peers to earn my All-District nod. I now channel that same analytical approach into my training, using my firsthand experience of deconstructing the position to help young athletes achieve their own competitive milestones.

A client can expect a highly structured, intense, and position-specific session designed to bridge the gap between basic mechanics and actual game situations. Because team practices rarely offer dedicated time for goalkeepers, my sessions focus heavily on the microscopic details of the position: footwork efficiency, angle mastery, handling technique, and distribution.

A typical one-hour training session is broken down into four progressive phases:

1. Dynamic Warmup & Handling (10 Minutes)
We start with a position-specific dynamic warmup to get the legs firing, followed by stationary handling drills. We focus purely on hand-eye coordination, catching technique (the "W" or contour catch), and securing the ball into the chest to prevent rebounds.

2. Footwork & Positioning (15 Minutes)
A great save is made with the feet before the hands ever touch the ball. We use agility ladders and cone grids to work on explosive lateral movements, drop steps, and the precise footwork required to set your feet quickly before a shot is taken. We also do "angle play" drills, tying a rope from both goal posts to the center of the field so the athlete can physically see how to cut down the shooter's angle.

3. Technical Diving & Shot Stopping (20 Minutes)
Once the foundation is set, we move to the ground. We work on collapsing dives, extension dives, and proper landing mechanics to ensure the athlete is maximizing their reach without risking injury. This transitions into live shot-stopping, starting from a static position and evolving into chaotic, multi-rebound scenarios where the goalie must make a save, recover immediately, and face a secondary shot.

4. Distribution, Game Scenarios & Review (15 Minutes)
The modern goalie is the first line of offense. We work on goal kicks, punts, and throwing accuracy (sling throws and rolls) to launch counterattacks. Finally, we do a 5-minute cooldown where we review the session, discuss the mental aspect of the game, such as how to reset after giving up a goal, and outline homework for them to practice before our next session.
