More About Coach Bill
I have been helping players and teams develop and excel for almost 20 years, including 13 seasons of coaching basketball at the college level. My coaching accomplishments are numerous and feature a host of both individual player and team awards, highlighted by winning the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2010. An excellent communicator, recruiter and game-tactician, I am well-established in developing all areas of any player's game, both on and off the court.
Serving most recently as the Associate Head Coach for Cal Poly Pomona, I helped build the program from perennial middle-of-the-pack status into a nationally recognized NCAA Division II power. Since joining the staff in 2002-03 through the 2011-12 campaign:
- the Broncos’ overall record is 188-79
- California Collegiate Athletic Association Champions in 2005, 2009 and 2010
- 6 trips to the NCAA Tournament (overall NCAA Tournament record is 17-5)
- NCAA Division II West Region Champions 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2010
- NCAA Division II Elite Eight in 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2010.
- the Broncos reached the 2009 Division II Championship game, falling on a 3 pt. buzzer-beater in overtime
- 2010 NCAA Division II National Champions
Prior to my experience at Cal Poly Pomona, I had a three year coaching stint at Grossmont College in San Diego. In the third and final season with the Griffins, the team earned the 2002 Pacific Coast Conference Championship. My coaching career began at my high school alma mater, Lincoln-Sudbury (MA), where I coached football, basketball and baseball for four years. An accomplished three-sport playing career at Lincoln-Sudbury led me to Fordham University (Bronx, NY) where I played tight end for the Rams’ football team and majored in English.
My reputation for player development is well-earned. The players I've coached have been named All-Americans, All-Region, Conference Player of the Year, All-Conference and Freshman of the Year and at least 12 of my former players have played or are still playing in the professional ranks. On the court, I am very experienced in coaching all phases of the game. Areas of specialty include post-play (offense and defense), shooting, 1-on-1 scoring, moving without the ball, ball-handling, footwork/agility, defense and rebounding. Furthermore, I have created successful strength, conditioning, agility and nutrition programs for all of my teams and also implemented regular yoga classes, which I led myself. These experiences have put me in position to share a variety of effective tips on overall health and wellness, injury prevention and maximizing peak physical performance.
Yet, regardless of what takes place within the realm of competition, I regularly play a role in developing more than just the athlete – I am passionate about also developing the person as a whole. Academic success, character building and sharpening mental toughness are among many areas of emphasis that are frequently addressed. Additionally, as an experienced college recruiter, I am able to provide valuable insight into what it takes to become a legitimate college prospect and how to get there.
No matter what your level or where you are at in your game, I will help to make you better.
As a three sport athlete (football, basketball, baseball) at Lincoln-Sudbury (MA), I was very fortunate to play on some excellent teams with great coaches, resulting in multiple team championships and a host individual awards, including Most Outstanding Athlete for a school that also received the Dalton Award (given by The Boston Globe to the best overall HS athletic program). After being recruited by colleges in all three sports, I decided to enroll at Fordham University (Bronx, NY), where I was a tight end on the school's football team.
While training sessions will vary depending on the level of the athlete and the set of skills to be addressed in any given workout, a typical session would have the following format:
- dynamic warm-up (footwork, agility, etc)
- ball-handling drills (activate the eyes and hands; quick hands!/strong hands!)
- 2-5 skill development drills
- active rest (i.e. shooting, FT's, Mikan's, etc)
- 2-5 skill development drills
- active rest
- live action
- cool down (shooting)
- post-workout stretch
- workout review (have a notebook!)

Larry G., Professional Player (Testimonial)
In my opinion, Bill is a passionate kind of coach. He loves to teach and help guys get better and he takes pride in coaching a player who is willing to learn, to work and get better. Bill helped me to learn how to develop my game to where I can be the best. He helped build my confidence as a player as soon as I arrived at Cal Poly. Without that confidence, I probably wouldn't be the same player I am today. How has Bill Bannon helped you most in terms of player development? Bill helped me to not just use my talent and athletic ability but to also use my basketball IQ and feel for the game. That was the first part of me developing into a good player. He also opened up my eyes to be more aggressive and not so indecisive when I'm on the floor. He helped me to understand a lot about the game on both ends of the floor.
