More About Coach Ben

I started coaching basketball 5 years ago in South Dakota. Prior to that I was high school athlete. During my first experience, I volunteered my time to coach a group of 8th graders. Spending the time and developing those players gave me more confident about coaching. Coaching the game basketball is one thing that I'm passionate about especially when it comes to developing and teaching young aspiring athletes. I played collegiate basketball at a community college in Minnesota then transferred to Missouri Western where i was a walk on. During my time in Missouri I experience some tough life changing events.

Everything that I teach during sessions or practice are skill development drills that I either learned throughout my basketball experience from different coaches and mentors. I believe in the term that as a coach you shouldn't reinvent the wheel. During my sessions I focus on different aspects of the game. However, I specifically focus on the little things conditioning, foot work, pivot with ball without the ball, setting screens, cutting to the basket, rebounding, passing, moving without the ball, feel the defender, moving feet correctly. I also, do my own research as what are top collegiate and professional coaches teaching their players to improve their game. Furthermore, the broad aspect of being an all around basketball player; rebounding, defense, ball handling, shooting, passing.

In all retrospect, my sessions include conditioning workout that includes shooting at game speed level. Then will get into, some foot work and pivoting aligned with a dummy defender to simulate game situations. Then, will get into a series of ball handling segments, and passing. I focus on developing fundamentally sound student athletes. Its usually best to have my session with two players that way they both get to show case their improvement on each other and gain confident. That way I can analyze, which part of their game needs more focused and improvement.

Stretching IS VERY IMPORTANT, Individual session, I like to Allow 5-10 minutes.
For Group Session or a team, I prefer asking the players to come 10-15 minutes early, so we can stretch and maximized our time together.
Warm Up Drill: 5 Minutes, Shooting Drill/Catch and Shoot or Spot Shooting or Foot work.
Select Drills: that focus on individual fundamentals skills, the drills I pick are emphasize around the type of skill we want to accomplish or we want to correct.
Ball Handling: 10-15 minutes Stationary Ball Handling, Speed Dribbling, 2 ball Dribbling, Tight chair Dribbling,

Shooting Drills: 10-15 minutes, Form Shooting, lay-Up shooting, Mikan Drill, Guard Breakdown shooting drills, 2 man Shooting drills, Free throw Shooting drills,

Defense: 15 minutes, Drills Emphasizing Defensive slides, Denial, deny flash, defend screen, post Defense, help and Recover, Help side Defense, Ball screens, Rebounding.

Finish Session: with a competitive game competing against he or she self, or against me or another player. then allow time for some positive encouragement and positive notes.
