More About Coach Andrew
In the fall, I will join the Quinnipiac University Men's Basketball team as a graduate assistant coach. I currently am the head coach of the Rens United 17u team, part of the NY Rens organization. In my 3 years coaching the team, I have had over 30 players go on to play at the college level, including 10 Division I players.
I've also spent the past two seasons as the assistant coach at Wilbraham & Monson Academy, where I've coached and developed 20 college players, including 7 that currently play Division I basketball.
I played my first two years of college at Division III Kenyon College in Ohio. In high school, I scored 1,700 points and earned a number of New York City and NY state awards.
A client can expect to focus on a particular shot type, action, or decision-making scenario. We'll gradually build up from foundational repetitions, ultimately to game speed reps against live defense.
For example, if the focus of the day is rising from the corner to the wing to catch and shoot a jumpshot, we'll build out our session like this.
- First 15 minutes: After form shooting, we'll shoot short range 12 foot jump shots off the catch, focusing only on taking the final two steps before the shot, the same way we take our last two steps when rising from the corner.
- Next 15 minutes: Now, we'll increase the speed of each rep and our shooter will take the full path from the corner to the wing before catching and shooting. This portion of the workout will emphasize getting a high quantity of quality reps shooting from the wing.
- Next 15 minutes: Next, we'll work on shooting this same shot with a token defender chasing us. So either myself or a workout partner will start one step below the shooter in the corner. The shooter will start to run towards the wing to receive the pass and take their shot, and the defender will chase them and then lightly contest the shot to simulate a game scenario.
- Lastly, we'll play an entirely live game of 1 on 1 out of this same shot, either against myself or a workout partner. The game will start with the shooter running from the corner to the wing to catch a pass, and the defender chasing them. Once the shooter catches the pass, the game will be live.
This workout format takes a player through each developmental phase of learning a new skill or movement, finishing with a chance to make decisions against real defense.
