More About Coach Alex
I graduated from Coastal Carolina University, and majored in Sport Management, and Recreation, along with a minor in Communications. I took many coaching classes in college, and did in an internship with a Basketball Training and Development company based in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina by the name of Manzer Basketball Academy. The owner, Colin Stevens, played D1 basketball at Coastal Carolina, and continued to play pro basketball in the ABA. We trained kids from ages 7-all the way to professionals. My abilities to pick up what Colin preached through basketball, and basketball training allowed me to better my coaching abilities. I learned to teach discipline properly, and to build a professional relationship with my client at all times. Working with Colin not only increased my skills as a coach/trainer, but as a player as well.
I now work as the Assistant Director for A Step Ahead Hoops in Newton, MA. My duties consist of coaching/training kids of all ages/skill ability. I Head Coach 3 AAU teams. (4th Grade, 8th Grade, 10th Grade). I have brought numerous teams to the AAU State Championship, and qualified numerous teams to AAU Nationals in Hampton, VA. I run my own 1 on 1 individual training sessions, along with group training sessions. I also direct Basketball Camps with over 40-50 players. Along with working at A Step Ahead Hoops, I am also the Assistant Varsity Basketball/Head Freshmen Coach at Boston Latin School in Boston, MA. My duties there are training, coaching, and mentoring players grades 8-12.
In high school, I was a 3 Letter Athlete. I played football, basketball, and lacrosse. I could have furthered my basketball skill in college at Salem State University, Anderson College, or UMass Dartmouth, but I suffered a severe Injury to my left hand my Senior year.
A typical session would begin with stretching and calisthenics, followed by a light jog to get the body fully prepared. Next, depending on the area of work for the day, I would start out with light dribbling/shooting/defensive/guard/big-man drills (depending on what the client wants). Some of these aforementioned drills would be: two-ball dribbling, one handed shooting, shuffles with bands, ladders, lefty and righty layups, jab drills, defensive footwork, Yo-yo shooting etc. The next part of the session would be something to test the mind and body. An example would be full court layups for an extended period of time. The client must get 6 in a row without missing, under 40 seconds. Obviously a lot of these drills would depend on age, and skill ability. The last part of the session would be strength conditioning: pushups, situps, lunges, planks, body squats etc. The athlete must be not only skilled in basketball to succeed, but in top shape as well.
