More About Coach Alan

I am a USSF A Licensed Soccer Coach with over 20 years of experience coaching, developing, and mentoring youth soccer players, from beginners taking their first steps in the game to elite players competing at the highest levels of youth soccer.

Originally from England, I have dedicated my professional career to helping young athletes reach their potential through high-quality coaching, individual development, and a genuine passion for the game.

I currently serve as Academy Director for Liverpool FC International Academy Maryland – Western, where I oversee player development, coach education, and the implementation of the Liverpool FC coaching methodology. I am also the founder and owner of Unique Soccer Academy, established in 2015 to provide professional soccer training, camps, clinics, and individual development opportunities throughout Western Maryland.

Previously, I served as Maryland State Youth Soccer Association Director of Coaching (2015–2021), overseeing the state's Olympic Development Program (ODP), developing coaches, and delivering US Soccer coaching education. I have also held leadership and coaching positions with Brit-Am Soccer Academy and Potomac Soccer Association.

I have experience working with players ages 3–19, from recreational and grassroots soccer to competitive travel, high school, and elite youth development environments.

My professional qualifications include:

- USSF A License
- USSF Club Technical Leadership License – Level 1
- USSF Grassroots and D License Educator
- Liverpool FC Accredited Coach
- English FA Coaching Badges – Levels 1 and 2
- United Soccer Coaches Director of Coaching Diploma
- NSCAA Regional Goalkeeping Diploma
- ISPAS Level 1 and 2 Accredited Performance Analyst

My coaching philosophy centers on developing technically confident, intelligent, creative, and resilient players. I believe every athlete has the potential to improve when provided with the right environment, appropriate challenges, and personalized guidance.

Whether a player is just beginning their soccer journey, preparing for competitive travel soccer, or aspiring to play at the collegiate level, my goal is to help them become the best version of themselves.

My greatest accomplishments in soccer have come through more than two decades of developing young players, building successful soccer programs, and educating the next generation of coaches.

Originally from England, I have built my professional career around the game I love, earning the prestigious USSF A License, one of the highest coaching qualifications awarded by US Soccer.

As Maryland State Youth Soccer Association Director of Coaching from 2015–2021, I helped oversee the Olympic Development Program and played a significant role in expanding coaching education throughout the state. During my tenure, we increased the number of licensed coaching instructors from 2 to 17 and supported the development of more than 400 licensed coaches annually.

As Director of Coaching at Brit-Am Soccer Academy, I helped grow participation from approximately 250 athletes to more than 4,000+ annually through camps, clinics, and youth development programs.

At Potomac Soccer Association, I helped develop an academy structure and supported the organization's growth from 7 teams to 40 teams.

In 2015, I founded Unique Soccer Academy, creating opportunities for young players across Western Maryland to develop their skills and love for soccer.

My professional journey has also included becoming an accredited Liverpool FC coach and serving as Academy Director for Liverpool FC International Academy Maryland – Western.

While trophies and results are rewarding, my proudest accomplishments are seeing young athletes develop their skills, confidence, character, and lifelong passion for the game.

My individual training sessions focus primarily on **technical proficiency, physical development, and building confidence on the ball**. With over 20 years of professional coaching experience, I design structured, age-appropriate sessions that challenge players, improve performance, and help them reach their individual potential.

Every player develops at a different rate, so each session is tailored to the athlete's age, current ability, physical capabilities, and personal development goals.

**1. Initial Assessment & Goal Setting (5 minutes)**

We begin by identifying the player's strengths, areas for improvement, and personal goals. During our first session, I assess technical ability, coordination, balance, agility, and movement mechanics to establish an individualized development plan.

**2. Dynamic Warm-Up & Athletic Movement (10 minutes)**

Sessions begin with activities designed to prepare the body for training while improving fundamental athletic abilities.

Areas of focus include:
- Dynamic mobility and flexibility
- Balance and coordination
- Agility and changes of direction
- Footwork and movement mechanics
- Acceleration and deceleration techniques

**3. Technical Skill Development (20 minutes)**

The primary focus is developing a player's comfort, confidence, and technical ability with the ball.

Training activities may include:
- Ball mastery and close control
- First touch and receiving techniques
- Passing accuracy and technique
- Dribbling and changes of direction
- Turning and ball manipulation
- 1v1 attacking moves and footwork
- Striking, shooting, and finishing technique
- Developing proficiency with both feet

Players receive individualized demonstrations, corrective feedback, and opportunities for high repetition to develop consistent technique.

**4. Speed, Agility & Physical Development (15–20 minutes)**

Physical development is integrated into sessions to improve the athletic qualities needed for soccer.

Depending on the player's age and developmental stage, training may include:
- Acceleration and sprint mechanics
- Speed and quickness
- Agility and reaction exercises
- Explosive movements and jumping mechanics
- Balance, stability, and core strength
- Coordination and body control
- Age-appropriate strength and conditioning

Where appropriate, technical activities are combined with physical challenges to develop the ability to maintain ball control, coordination, and technique at higher speeds and under physical fatigue.

**5. Reflection & Individual Development Goals (5 minutes)**

We finish each session by reviewing the player's progress, recognizing improvements, and identifying specific areas to continue working on.

Players may receive individual technical exercises or physical development activities they can complete independently between sessions.

**My Training Philosophy**

My approach is built around three key principles:

**Technique:** Developing confident, technically proficient players through quality repetition, correct technique, and progressive challenges.

**Athleticism:** Improving speed, agility, coordination, balance, and strength to support overall athletic performance.

**Confidence:** Creating a positive, challenging environment where players feel comfortable making mistakes, pushing their limits, and recognizing their improvement.

I believe individual training should complement team practices by providing focused attention and repetition that players may not always receive in a team environment.

My goal is simple: **Help every athlete become technically stronger, physically more capable, and more confident in their abilities.**
