More About Coach Tyrone
I started training fighters/boxers, in 2005, at James Shuler's Gym, located at 42nd & Broklyn, here in Philadelphia, Pa. There I was asked to train two up and coming prospects by the owner of the gym who goes by the name of Buster. Buster and I were trained by the same trainer at Joe Frazier's Gym, the legendary Sam Hickman. Mr. Hickman, was also the trainer of the first African Olympic Boxing team in 1980. The two boxers I was assigned to where an amethur Welterweight, who went on to try out for the United States Olympic team, after winning the Nationals and a Heavyweight, who compiled a 9-0 record before moving back to New York City. In 2011, I trained two more fighters at Lonnie Young's Gym, here in Philly, a Lightweight and a Middleweight. They were both amethur's and they both went on to turn professional. I also coached Special Olympics basketball. I started as an assistant in 2005 and came back as a head coach in 2007.
I've played Little League Baseball, Little Big Five Basketball, High School Football & Track and Field, Jr. College Basketball and Amethur & Professional Boxing. I've won three M.V.P.'s in Little League Baseball, M.V.P. in Little Big Five Basketball, I was Co-Captain of my Jr. College Basketball team, I was offered Scholarships in Football to Temple and Cheyney University's and in Amethur Boxing, I had a record of 6-2 and was once ranked No. 1 in the East Cost and in the Pro's I was 6-0, with four knockouts.
The first thing I concentrate on is conditioning. I believe that 90% of all sports is condition, 5% ability and 5% heart. So the first thing I focus on is getting my fighters in the best shape they can be in and work from there. I get them ready to go the distance, in order to keep them from getting hurt. We start out by jumping rope or learning how to jump rope properly, then we work on foot work. Then it's into the ring to shadow box, so I can get a feel of the client's ability. Then out of the ring to shadow box in front of the mirrow. And Last but not least, we begin to learn how to jab. I teach my fighters that every punch starts with the jab and is worked off the jab. This drill is followed by a trip to the heavy bag to illustrate what I mean about the jab and how important it is to have a good one. Then we hit the exercise table, before we hit the shower and then get home, eat and sleep. Then start the next day off by jogging for at least 30 minutes in the morning, right out of bed. My plan is to make my fighter eat, drink and sleep boxing. Keeping my instructions on his mind from the time he awakes until the time he goes to sleep. Then after at least two months of training, it's into the ring to spare and so we can both see exactly what we've learned.
