Soccer Philosophy and Coaching

Having been born in England as well as spending many years growing up in Hong Kong and America, I have been fortunate enough to witness different cultures of soccer (football). It has shaped my perspective on how the game should be played. The soccer in England was a very fast paced style of play with a great amount of long balls involved, however in Hong Kong and America the style of play involves speeding the tempo up, keeping the ball on the ground. The style of the game is constantly changing, although the basic fundamentals of the game will never change, meaning technique will always be an important aspect of the game. My philosophy on soccer values technique very much; I feel if one has great technique, then the other aspects of soccer (pace, strength, decision making, etc) will follow as the players grow older and become more experienced.

The coaching drills I like to use allow a player to improve his technique, decision making, quick feet, speed of play, and movement with team play. These for me are the most important fundamentals of the game as one can always improve their strength and speed as they grow older, becoming more mature. I enjoy coaching and have great motivation for it because I love to see the players improve. I am very thankful that coaches put a lot of time into me as a player helping me improve constantly and I want to give that back, making players be the best they can.
