More About Coach Ryan

I have been training now for eight years, and training clients/athletes for four of those eight years. I enjoy specializing with athletes of any level (competitive or recreational) preferably ages 13-45. I have my undergraduate degree from Rutgers University in Exercise Science/Nutrition, I am a candidate for my Masters in Performance Enhancement/Injury Prevention/Rehab (graduating Dec 14th, 2018), and I am a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Speed and Explosion Specialist, Corrective Exercise Specialist, and Performance Enhancement Specialist. In my experience coaching I have worked with athletes of various levels (general individuals training for an event/sport as well as middle school, high school, and collegiate athletes). I have worked and coached with EXOS, a top corporation in athletics working with individuals ranging from the NFL combine to national teams and also hold my Performance Specialist Certification. I currently coach and train at Gabriele Fitness and Performance where I have been for over the last year and and half, working with high school, collegiate, and recreational athletes train for sport, events, and fun!

For a majority of my life I played lacrosse, baseball, and ice hockey. I was awarded to the county awards most years and unfortunately could not play further due to injury. My goal as a strength coach is to help avoid the athlete the same scenario I endured, and to reduce the risk of injuries as much as possible.

A client can expect to learn something new each session. As a strength and conditioning specialist, I am a motivator, educator, and their supporter. I will be able to ensure the best training for my clients and this stems from a movement screen I put them through before starting to gauge weak points and exercises that could bring forth injury. From here I develop a dynamic warm-up to get their body prepped for the workout, and the warm-up will vary for every individual based on their movement screen, and the exercises done in the session. I will design the warm-up to prime the muscles that are not activating properly and to set the standard for the workout. The rest of the session depends on the goals of the athlete and what the athlete is training for. I will always focus on technique, and designing a program with the most appropriate exercises. If running is the goal, running will be the priority with some strength training. If strength/power if the goal, those will be the priority. Session will end with stretches I find beneficial to keep my athlete healthy and questions if any to be answered.

Client Reviews

Hi! I am a Big 10 collegiate field hockey player entering into my junior season. During the previous season I began having a lot of back pain and back problems that resulted in me getting surgery. Ryan was super welcoming, understanding and motivating about all of my problems and everything I wanted to achieve. Each time I talked with Ryan I was met with warm responses, encouragement and help when I needed it. One thing that I felt occurred when working with previous trainers was that I did not feel that I could easily approach them or talk to them. This was not the case with Ryan, he was super approachable, understanding and easy to talk to about anything. Not only did he motivate me but he made me feel that I could accomplish everything in the time frame I wanted too. With his help through workouts and meal plans I was able to lose 4 pounds in a month and am on track to accomplish my goals in my time frame! Ryan has truly helped me a lot by educating me, encouraging me and helping me better myself. I highly recommend anyone to sign up with him, he can truly help you change your life!
Hi, My name is Brandyn and I have been working out for several years. I never really understood personal training until I got very into my workouts and was looking to see some serious results. At first I thought that lifting was simply going to the gym four days a week and lifting as heavy as you could for an hour and going home and eating whatever you felt like. What Ryan has taught me is that, in order to see results in the gym as well as in the mirror is that you need to commit to the lifestyle involved in weightlifting. Lately Ryan has been very involved in my food consumption as well as my active rehab. I tore my labrum 100% last year and since then, I have been back, working hard every day. Certain exercises were not possible for me to continue to do right away, so in order to build myself back to where I was, Ryan offered certain alternatives such as switching to a heavy cable regiment to build a base before jumping back at the dumbbells and hurting myself again. In terms of my diet, Ryan has been extremely helpful. The base of the plan is to consume enough food calorically in order to build muscle while burning fat. By hitting my certain macros, I am able to do this and still fit in some time for chicken parm every now and then. We are currently working together on a cutting meal plan for me for the summer and I cannot wait to see the results. I recommend Ryan to any person looking to improve on their lifestyle whether you have been lifting for years, or just getting started. He has seen me from ground up and boy have I changed. As with anyone that does workout, I can always get better! If anyone would like a more detailed referral for Ryan’s work, please feel free to reach out.
After being an athlete my whole life and never having to worry about proper nutrition or forcing myself to workout it was an utter shock when my sports career ended due to serious knee injuries. As a result of being unable to play sports and continuing to eat what I pleased, I gained A LOT of weight. I tried going to the gym and doing some research but found no change in how I felt or in my appearance. Around the time I was ready to give up a friend my mine told me about Ryan. They worked together at Rutgers in a gym and assured me he could get me back to being bathing suit ready. He taught me the correct way to eat and workouts that worked best for me. Due to my knee injuries he really focused on teaching me the correct methods to lift without re-injuring myself. With all that said and done I am down 25 pounds, I feel more confident, and I learned more about myself during this process than I expected. Ryan pushed me while also teaching me to learn my own limits.
I was introduced to Ryan Shakespeare by word of mouth, from a mutual friend. I was looking for someone who could help me get back in shape, but also gain mass. I had played baseball my entire life, through high school, but while in high school I was on a consistent eating and lifting schedule. Once I arrived to college I quickly found that drinking and partying also included laziness and excuses for me not getting back to the gym. Once I graduated, I knew I had to change back to my old ways. That’s where Ryan helped. I asked for Ryan’s help because he mentioned he had help others in the same situation as me. Once I saw the results of his other clients, I knew he was the best trainer to push me, not only to where I was before, but to new levels that would bring my confidence back. He put me on a regiment that closely mimic that of my high school days, but with strategic enhancements that provided me with even better results. The workouts were grueling and at times when I came home from work I just wanted to take a nap. But it seemed that Ryan always knew when to check in, because those are the times he pushed me to get out of the house and hit the gym. I’m glad he did. That kind of personal attention is remarkable and really motivated me to not let him down, and when I saw the before and after pictures from college to current, I knew I didn’t let myself down either. With those personable characteristics, added to the professionalism and obvious results, Ryan is definitely someone I would recommend. If you’re in the same situation as me, or the tons of other college graduates that want to get back to where they once were, reach out to Ryan Shakespeare.
