More About Coach Ryan

I have coached in a number of capacities over the years, in three different areas: Swimming, Football, and Strength Training.

I currently serve as the head strength coach for the Oakton High School Swim and Dive team, leading 20-30 athletes per session through fundamental mobility exercises and basic strength movements (Push, Pull, Squat, Hinge, etc.)

I have experience coaching Wide Receivers and Quarterbacks at the High School and Collegiate level in both one-on-one and group settings.

I previously coached as an assistant swim coach for my summer swim club, Fox Mill Woods, as well as for the Oakton Swim Club, Oakton High School's Special Olympics swim team.

I am a NASM Certified Personal Trainer (CPT), looking to become a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (CSCS) in the near future.

Football: I played wide receiver (all positions: X, Y, Z, F) for the University of Virginia. I was a true Walk-on (tryout player) that earned 5 starts in 22 games, catching 10 passes for 112 yards and 1 TD. I was a 3-time ACC All Academic, and earned a full athletic scholarship in my final year on the team (2016). I played one season of football at Oakton High School, catching 24 passes for 408 yards and five touchdowns in 2012 as a senior, earning second team all-district and scholar athlete awards.

Swimming: I swam for the majority of my life, eventually becoming a NCSA Junior Nationals Finalist in the 50 and 100 breaststroke as a senior in HS. I was a captain for the Oakton HS Swim team and was a 2012 Virginia State Finalist in the 100 breaststroke. I was an Automatic All-American qualifier in the 200 medley relay in 2012 (state runner-up), and a member of Oakton’s 2009-10 state championship team and its 2011-12 state runner-up squad.

Session plans are highly dependent on the abilities and goals of the athlete. I do not believe that a cookie-cutter or one-size-fits-all approach is appropriate for any athlete at any level. Everyone is different, and deserves highly customized and individual-specific plans that best suit the needs of the athlete. With that said, I do believe that there are common areas for improvement among most young athletes. For football, I focus specific on a number of common issues:

1) Drops: Wide receivers can always improve hand-eye coordination and focus throughout the process of the catch. This is not genetic!

2) Stance/Starts: Weak hips and legs can lead to inefficient loading positions and wasted steps. At the next level, every step counts! I work to improve hip and leg strength so as to train optimal loading and increase power and agility.

I do NOT believe that every athlete needs to master a 3+ step release to be successful. Not every drill you see on Instagram directly transfers to an effective release in 1-on-1 situation, so I don't coach over-complicated release techniques!

3) Route Mastery: For athletes looking for strategies on how to "win" their routes at the next level, I teach a number of strategies for almost every route in the route tree, both in the slot and out wide. Because I was not the best athlete on the field, I was forced to learn how to win routes with good leverage, variations in route set-up and release technique, and great understanding of coverages. I was praised by my WR coach in college for my understanding of route concepts and the playbook as a whole (both pro-style and no-huddle), and as a result, I have unique experience from actual in-game experience at every WR position (Outside, X and Z, and in the slot, Y and F). I earned playing time because I demonstrated clear understanding of the plays and rarely made mistakes on where to line up, what route I was running, and what I had to do to get open or create space for the primary look.

Client Reviews

Coach Ryan is a great coach for my son who is 14. He has been teaching him techniques that he has never used before.

Coach Ryan has been phenomenal with my son and we can't wait for the next session!

He made an immediate connection and has a true love for the game and teaching it. After the session my son was motivated to keep working and practice the techniques Coach Ryan showed him.

I'd recommend Coach Ryan without hesitation!!

My son has aspirations of playing collegiate football someday, and coach Ryan is someone who has been there and has the inside knowledge and coaching methods to help my son. I could see the excitement in his face while running drills and routes with coach Ryan. It's hard as a parent to get their kid's attention, but with Coach Ryan my son was focused and receptive. Coach Ryan's enthusiasm about football and training was evident and something my son emulates to be. As soon as we got into the car after their first session my son said he loved the training and wanted to continue.
