More About Coach Palmer

Palmer H. has coached privately and at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Auburn University, Brown University, and The University of Georgia, as well as working in athletics at Cornell University.

At the Illinois Institute of Technology, he was the Assistant Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track and Field Coach in the fall of 2015. He designed training as the head distance coach, handled team management, and organized on-campus visits for prospects as a recruiting coordinator, which brought in a recognized class. Numerous All-Time School Record Book achievements, personal bests, Runner of the Week awards, and top individual and team finishes were recorded throughout the season.

Tech produced All-Independent First Team honoree and Association of Division III Independents Male Runner of the Year Samuel Wietlispach. He bested Division I runners at meets, clocked School History performances, held some of the fastest cross country times for the AD3I and United States Collegiate Athletic Association, and was also a recipient academically in both fields.

Cole Dammeier had a strong freshman campaign being top 20 individually to cap off the men's team at 13th place at The 2015 USCAA Cross Country National Championships and an All-Independent Second Team selection, as well as one other men's runner earning the same postseason honor and making steady improvements at nearly every race.

The women's number one distance runner emerged as a leading finisher at most meets, along with being 26th at The USCAA Championships and having an All-Independent First Team spot, and with two other women earning Honorable Mentions, including AD3I and USCAA All-Academic member Brooke Bell, who earned 29th place at the national meet (courtesy of the Illinois Tech athletic department).

The coaching staff collected both the 2015 AD3I Men's Cross Country and USCAA Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year titles.

Prior to being in Chicago, he was with the Auburn University men's and women's cross country and track and field team as a Volunteer Assistant Coach during the 2014-2015 season.

The men's cross country team captured 3rd place at The 2014 NCAA Division I South Regional and SEC Championships, received national votes, and were ranked as high as 2nd in their respective Region.

Auburn had the men's individual NCAA Division I South Regional Cross Country champion, SEC Runner-Up, and USTFCCCA South Region Runner of the Year, whose season best that fall positioned him number one in the SEC and also finished first and second at the majority of meets.

The Tigers had runners who earned All-First and All-Second Team SEC status for the men, All-Freshman SEC team recognition for the men and women, and SEC Runner of the Week nods, USTFCCCA All-South Region, and All-Academic accolades with a perfect APR score for both squads, and produced two NCAA Men's Division I Cross Country Championships competitors.

AU men's cross country team had a CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District ®, SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, USTFCCCA All-Academic member, and held the highest team GPA among all athletic programs. On the recruiting side, an elite class was signed early for the cross country and track and field programs in December 2014, with nationally renowned newcomers.

Women’s track and field was ranked 18th for indoors and 21st for outdoors in 2015 by USTFCCCA, while having a high ranking in the South Region and an educational team status. Auburn track had several marks that placed in the AU Record Book, were All-Southeastern Conference and scoring, and advanced to the NCAA Championships.

The distance program developed Ty McCormack who won The 2015 Penn Relays 10k, competed at The 2015 World University Games, and later at The 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Marathon Trials while hitting an IAAF mark as a post-collegiate.

In addition to coaching and recruiting duties, he participated in compliance, CPR, finances, national home track and field meet management, part-time tasks, program coordination, travel, and van testing for cross country and track and field. He also assisted with The Auburn University Leadership Institute for the development of student-athletes as an affiliate.

He previously was on staff at Cornell University in The Sports School throughout the summer of 2014 and assisted in internal operations for customer service. Working with the Big Red included facilitating day-to-day duties in the athletic department, and separately as a guest coach and speaker at the cross country and track and field camps.

Before the Sports School, he was at another Ancient Eight institution, Brown University from 2013-2014. His focus was on the women’s distance program as an NCAA Countable Volunteer Assistant Coach and also contributed to administrative responsibilities and scouting.

The Bears posted several performances that earned a spot in The Brown School Record Book with prs, and had an individual who earned Academic and Second-Team All-Ivy, and a USTFCCCA All-Northeast Region honor in cross country, a scorer at The Indoor Heptagonal Championships and two scorers at The Outdoor Meet, and a qualifier for the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round in track and field.

Both men's and women's cross country earned USTFCCCA scholastic recognition during the 2013-2014 season. One of the women's top distance runners went on to run professionally in Colorado on an Olympic Development team.

He began at The University of Georgia as a Volunteer Assistant Cross Country and Track and Field Coach and handled camps, CDL training, clinics, departmental work, and recruiting tasks for the 2012-2013 seasons on support staff.

UGA recorded top finishes during the 2012 outdoor season, placing 3rd for the men at The 2012 SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships and 21st for the Lady Bulldogs at the NCAA Division I Track and Field Outdoor National Championships, while also having the men ranked 9th and 12th for the women in the national outdoors polls.

In the cross country season that fall, the men recorded 2nd place at The 2012 the NCAA Division I South Regional and SEC Championships. Men and women were ranked in the national polls with the men holding second in the South Regional polls.
The men's and women's squads qualified for The 2012 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in only the second time in school history with the men finishing 19th, the highest national finish ever and topped other established programs, and tied for the best combined team finish.

The UGA women earned their berth to The 2012 NCAA Championships by virtue of their 3rd place at the NCAA Division I South Regional Championships and securing an at-large bid spot, and had both the number one male and female runners place in the top 100.

Georgia men and women's cross country programs garnered All-First and All-Second Team SEC and USTFCCCA All-South Region honors, with a men's SEC Runner of the Week award and an All-SEC Freshman nod.

The Bulldogs women's indoor program was ranked 7th throughout the 2013 season and established themselves as one of the top teams in the Region, where they went on to finish 10th at The 2013 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field National Championships, while the men posted an 18th place finish, which was the second-best NCAA indoor combined finish in program history.

A women's DMR crew qualified for The 2013 NCAA Division I Indoor Championships and posted 10th place with the number two All-Time School Record Book performance, along with other NCAA indoor qualifiers for the UGA mid-distance squad.

Track was ranked 6th for the men and 8th for the women by USTFCCCA during the outdoor season and had the 4th best recruiting class by Track & Field News in 2012-2013, with the Georgia women concluding their year with an 11th place finish at The 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

UGA track had Drake Relays champion and NCAA leader in the 1500 meters Carly Hamilton, and multiple student-athletes who garnered All-SEC and individual champion titles, All-American finishers, and UGA records in 2013.

Georgia athletes also qualified for The 2013 USA Championships and other world-class meets. Cross country and track and field were both stellar in the classroom by posting some of the highest team GPAs that academic year for UGA athletics and having both squads earning individual and team USTFCCCA All-Academic titles from 2012-2013.

The season had UGA athletics earning a 10th place for The 2013 Learfield Director's Cup and also being one of the top 12 men's and women's cross country and track and field teams for The USTFCCCA Combined Program of the Year Award.

H. holds USATF Level I, USTFCCCA Coaching Academy (program and technical), and International Triathlon Coaching Association (NESTA) certifications, and two CEUS from the U.S. Sports Academy, with NCSA credentials.

He graduated from The University of Georgia's Franklin College of Arts and Sciences with an A.B. in History and completed his thesis on “The Inception of Intercollegiate Athletics in the Post-Civil War South,” and previously studied at Guilford College.

In the Washington D.C. area, while being in the software industry, he has directed a marathoner and others, along with having other positions and temp roles in the Southeast.

He competed for Guilford College and the University of Georgia from 2008-2012. A four-time Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men’s Cross Country Weekly Honor Roll and School Record Book member at Guilford, he subsequently transferred to UGA and walked on the men’s cross country program and additionally raced in triathlon at the national level there, and against professionals. During his prep career at Winder-Barrow High School, he was on a state championships competing cross country team.

Coach Palmer was an excellent coach. I'm a 33 year old runner without any formal training, and wanted to prioritize form for life-long running in the 1-10 mile range. I booked a session with Palmer to check my form and develop a plan for training. Palmer was extremely positive, knowledgeable, and affirming in his coaching. Coach Palmer is very good at communication to schedule for the first session and during the session. We connected quickly at midnight and met for the first session the next morning. He is very nice, very easy to work with and has tremendous experience and knowledge. He observed my son's running form and immediately pointed out things to improve.
