More About Coach Nathan

I am a Rutherford County High School teacher. I currently coach Girl's Soccer at Riverdale High School. I have been teaching science in the district for 9 years. I am a dean of students, lead environmental science teacher and help write curriculum for the district. I have been working with students of all ages, even the youngest of them, my degree is elementary education (K-5).

I have coached MTSU Club team, Christiana Middle, Rock Springs Middle.

I am from Flint, Michigan where I started playing soccer at the age of five. I spent my youth playing for Flint Steelers Soccer Club and then later on the U.S development academy member Vardar soccer club. I also played 4 years for Rockford University where I was named captain after my freshman year. I also played tennis and was the captain of the college tennis team my senior year. I also ran track in college focusing on the 1600m and 800m.

Players will start with a structured warm up. From there the session plan will vary based on areas of remediation/skill deficit. Players will have choice in session topic. For younger players, we will have more activities but for shorter periods of time to help maintain attention span. Older players may be able to stay focused longer and may have less activities but activities will go in more depth.

I can not meet more than once, maybe twice a week. Therefore, it is extremely important that players are working on things outside of sessions. Players that are not working outside of sessions will not see the growth they want/need.

For a typical 60 minute session, this is an example breakdown you can expect:

Warm-up (5-8 mins)
Passing and receiving drill focused on first touch (8 mins)
Explosive speed work (5 mins)
Water (2 mins)
Dribbling patterns - Head up survey surroundings (10 mins)
1 on 1 defending - Control the situation (10 mins)
Water (2 mins)
1 on 1 attacking w/ pace (10 mins)
Player choice (5 mins)
Homework and debrief with parent (5 mins) - 60 mins total
Help clean up if you are able but not expected.

Many times sessions may run over by a few minutes but they will never end early. Please let me know before we start if you need to leave right as the session ends.

Client Reviews

Great coach with many tips. Always punctual, comes with a thoughtful plan, and asks for feedback. Seeing much improvement after 2 weeks.

Coach Nathan did a good job with planning an intro session that would work for both my 11 year old and 9 year old daughters and keeping their attention. We have already booked more sessions and look forward to continuing the private training sessions during this time when soccer activities are hard to come by.

Teaches her things I’ve never seen her school coach do, and uses every second. He is well prepared and gives feedback. Would definitely recommend him and will keep using him!!

Coach Nathan does an outstanding job with my daughter on the soccer field. He keeps her focused and keeps the training sessions moving so she doesn’t get bored. He is always prepared, on time and ready to go.

My son has only had one session with Coach Nathan. He felt really good about his first hour and is ready for more! My husband and I have been impressed with coach Nathan’s organization and professionalism through out this process. Looking forward to more for our son.

Coach Nathan has made a seemingly impossible goal possible. After a couple of seasons of training, I was able to get myself in the right state of mind to accomplish set running goal. He helps by establishing milestones, working on techniques, and encourageing each step of the way. Thanks Coach!

Have only had one lesson with Nathan. Here was our experience. In the days leading up to our first lesson, Nathan responded promptly and professionally to any questions I had. Lesson date, time, and location were nailed down in a few short emails. We arrived at our lesson and Nathan already had the area laid out with cones and balls for the drills he wanted to go through. This is very important to me as it shows that there was thought and preparation put into the lesson and wasn’t just winging it. He introduced himself and asked my daughter what SHE wanted to get out of the lesson. I liked that because it helps her have some input on the lesson, making it more engaging for her. From there they moved into stretching and warm-up. He then took my daughter through a number of drills to assess skill and work rate. I was impressed to find that the drills provided a lot of touches on the ball and wasn’t just focused on tactics. By the end of the lesson, my daughter was ready for a break. Afterwards, he discussed with us what he saw that went well and what he saw needed to be addressed. Overall, I felt it was a very positive experience. Again, I liked that he was prepared. I felt he addressed my daughter in a manner that related well to a girl her age. Drills were challenging and the pace of the lesson was such that there was no time for her to get bored with any one particular drill. We will be scheduling more lessons with Nathan.

Great experience with Coach Sweet! My son looks forward to every session. Very detailed in teaching techniques. I highly recommend!

Great first time on training.

Coach Nathan is a great coach. Had a great way of communicating with my son. I can already see a difference after just one session.

Coach Nathan has a great way at looking at the individual player to assess what they need to work on. My son is finding his love for the game again because of Coach.

My 11 yr old son had an awesome experience with Coach Nathan. He focused on exactly what my son needed and I saw immediately the adjustments that were made in goal shots, foot work and fluidity. I will only use Coach Nathan from now on.

We just finished our 3rd session with Coach Nathan, yesterday. We feel he has helped boost our daughters skills and confidence a great amount in such a short time. My daughter feels completely comfortable with him and his style of training. He works her hard during the hour but he also makes it fun for her and we feel that helps her keep her love for the sport ongoing! Looking forward to having future sessions with him...

Have only trained with Coach Nathan 3 times, but already it's made a difference. I won in my age group in race today for the first time ever. Coach Sweet's emphasis on fundamentals - agility, balance, breathing, and speed - helps a lot, and he runs alongside you to help you set a manageable pace.

Very thorough in his training sessions!

Coach Nathan has been great! He covers all phases of training. Warm ups, speed/agility, footwork, passing and receiving, and proper technique for shooting. He even has my daughter work on strengthening stabilizing muscles to protect from ACL tears. All this in just 2 sessions, but practices do not feel rushed. He takes his takes his time and explains and critiques at the same time. I am very happy with what he is teaching and how he is teaching my daughter. I truly believe he teaches the small things that help make the big things happen!

My son has played soccer in the past but had limited coaching. After one session Coach Nathan pushed him to be better and asked questions on why my son thought things didn't go the right way... My son left with drills he can do at home as well. We will definitely continue to use Coach Nathan.

Coach Nathan

Diligent, focused and supportive. He delivers a calm approach that has given my son drive and confidence. His assignments between weeks my son has done without anyone having to tell him. He learned more about running and breathing; looking forward to future sessions.

Nate was a great teacher and coach. He is very detailed and has my son understanding the Why. That is the most important piece of teaching/coaching.

"Coach Nathan worked with my eight year old son, who has never played soccer before, and after one lesson can't talk about anything else. My son told us that the entire lesson was fun, never boring and like playing mini games the entire time. He loves practicing the foot work he learned and can't wait to schedule his next lesson."

Coach Nathan is extremely knowledgeable in soccer and appropriately pinpoints skill deficits. My sons loves having him as a coach.

Coach sweet is really great ! He knows his stuff and my daughter loves working with him!

My son enjoyed his first session with coach Nathan and is eagerly looking forward to the next. He is starting to feel more comfortable with the ball at his feet.

You have been such a wonderful mentor to Tucker, pushing him to be better. Not only on the field, but also better friend and all around kid. We have always felt you have been a wealth of knowledge on anything soccer, not only to Tucker, but to the parents. We thank you for all your dedication over the last 2 years with Tucker. You are the reason he wants to play in high school. You are the reason last summer EVERYDAY, in 90 degree weather, he would go out and do coerver drills. (not because YOU wanted him to, but because HE wanted to make YOU proud) You are the reason all he asked for Christmas was for Soccer gear. Most importantly, You are the reason he loves to play soccer.
You're an incredible coach and all the boys and the parents just love you and think so much of you! You're amazing with them....developing their skills, their love for the game, their confidence, their abilities, closer teamwork, teaching plays, learning positions and footwork....and the list goes on! Most of all, you're so passionate about it and energetic...you actually run & play soccer with them! They need someone very relatable at this age....and you're it! They really look up to you...but also feel like they can joke around with you.
Hey Coach I want to thank you for helping my son become a better soccer player and man. You have done an amazing job these past 3 years as a coach, teacher, mentor, and role model. He has loved playing for you, being in your class, and all the cool things you have done as a coach and teacher. It was you who got him into running and unlock a love he now has for running. Also you have him confidence in himself on and off the field. Thanks for all you have done for our kids, school, and community.
You have been his favorite coach. You took an interest in him and you pulled out the best in him. You treated him like a leader and he rose to the occasion!!! I know that you haven't coached him since last year, but you made a lasting impression on him. I think that your words of encouragement will stay with him!! Thank you for all that you have done for both my boys!!
