More About Coach Mike

Mike’s passion for the game of golf has been growing ever since his dad got him his first set of clubs and took him to the driving range when he was eight years old. His father, William, played golf for LaSalle College and taught Mike how to play the game. Originally from Nazareth, PA, Mike began his career in the golf business working at Whitetail Golf Club and honing his game. During the summer months, Mike would spend countless hours on the range and short game areas at Whitetail. He loved every minute of it and Mike soon found that he enjoyed competing as well. Mike joined his high school team where he was number one man his senior year at Nazareth High School. Mike also competed in numerous local junior golf events during the summer months. He learned how to win at a young age and this only added to his confidence and fueled his drive to be a competitive golfer. Mike would go on to win three Club Championships at Whitetail Golf Club. He was also a successful collegiate golfer beginning at Northampton Community College where he won the Junior College State Championship his freshmen year at Penn State’s Blue Golf Course. After two years at NCC he transferred to East Stroudsburg University, where he graduated in 2004 with a degree in Business Management.

Upon graduating college, Mike enrolled in the PGA program and became a Class “A” PGA Professional in three years. His career as a Professional began at Moselem Springs Golf Club in Fleetwood, PA where he worked for Head Professional Eric Shillinger. Eric convinced Mike to spend a winter season in Florida working for the Jim McLean Golf School at the Doral Resort and Spa near Miami. It was during his six month stint at the McLean school that Mike realized his passion for teaching the game of golf. He became a Jim McLean Certified Instructor and continues to teach the McLean system, which has become a major part of his teaching philosophy. Mike also spent a couple of winters working at Jupiter Hills Club in Tequesta, Florida. Jupiter Hills is the home of Bill Davis, one of the top instructors in Florida. Mike learned a lot from Bill and admires his approach to golf instruction as well. Mike also credits great teachers such as Christopher Toulson, Glen Farnsworth, Jared Isaacs, Michael Hunt, Tommie Marino, Bobby Cole, and Dr. Robert Neal for influencing his career. Mike also spent a winter working in the golf department at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Easton, PA. He is proud of the diverse experience he has working for the largest golf retailer in the country, the #1 Golf School in America, and some of the best private golf clubs in Pennsylvania and Florida.

Mike competed in several State Amateur tournaments as well as several state open championships in Pennsylvania. He continues to compete in PGA of America events in both the Philadelphia PGA Section and at the national level. In 2011, Mike qualified for and competed in the PGA National Assistants Championship at the PGA Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Mike credits his father’s subtle way of instruction growing up, never pushing him into golf, as the key to unlocking his potential. His father was smart enough to know that the lessons the game of golf teach, to build character, a positive attitude, and integrity, would become a part of Mike’s character. His parents enjoy watching their son compete and his Dad enjoys competing in Pro-Ams with Mike as well as occasionally caddying for his son in tournaments. Mike also cherishes the time spent with both his mother and father on the golf course while playing a casual round of golf. His love of competition, constant desire to improve, and passion for coaching others to play better golf, has been a strong motivation in his professional career. Mike’s wife, Nikki, is a Registered Nurse at Jefferson Hospital and he enjoys spending time with her when he is away from the golf course.

Mike enjoyed a two year stint as First Assistant Golf Professional at Stonewall in Elverson, PA. He enjoyed his time spent at Stonewall learning from their Golf Professional Emeritus, Ted McKenzie. In 2012, Mike accepted the Senior Assistant Golf Professional position at St. Davids Golf Club in Wayne, PA and remained in that role for two seasons. In 2014, he decided to pursue a career teaching the game full time. That transition led to his current role as the PGA Teaching Professional at St. Davids Golf Club. In September of 2015, Mike also took on the role of Assistant Men's Golf Team Coach of the NCAA Division II Chestnut Hill College Griffins. He spends the winter months attending numerous educational seminars and the PGA’s Demo Day and Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida. Mike will also be conducting a few Winter Golf Schools at the Marriott Beach Resort in Marco Island, Florida for members of St. Davids Golf Club and at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida for his Guest Students.

My teaching philosophy is based on the experience I have gained learning from some of the best and brightest minds in the golf world such as Jim McLean, Charlie King, Dr. Rick Jensen, and Henry Brunton to name a few. I am a big believer in the uniqueness of all golfers and the need to teach the individual rather than having a student conform to a model. I am adamantly against rigid “swing methods,” the countless golf instruction fads that come and go, or learning from an unqualified buddy or spouse. Reaching your true potential in golf is unlikely while following these courses of action.

The system that I have developed and ascribed to is a teaching philosophy that revolves around the proven, universal, and essential skills of golf. My system is a culmination of the most effective ways of improving a golfer’s abilities over the shortest period of time. My approach to golf instruction is to teach the game using a skills-based system and to coach my students on how to practice effectively. A system, rather than a strict model or method of instruction, allows for the golfer’s individuality to be preserved while fixing their most detrimental flaws. I will start by determining whether or not you possess the essentials skills of golf required to play your best. If you are lacking in a particular skill set, then that issue will be addressed and repaired prior to moving forward. This simplifies the process and allows the student to focus on the most important issues, which will result in immediate improvement once corrected.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."
- Albert Einstein

To reach your golfing potential, you must learn how to practice more effectively in order to transfer your newly mastered skills from the practice area to the golf course. By understanding the differences between technique and compete practice, you will finally be able to take your newly improved game to the course and start to lower your handicap. In order to shoot lower scores you must not only be a good ball striker, you also need a good short game, course management, and the mental toughness to succeed at this difficult game. I am a big believer in the all-around approach to practice in order to see consistent and lasting improvement. Finally, On-Course Coaching Sessions enable me to evaluate progress and see how the student manages club selection, shot selection, and emotions while on the golf course.

I have been around the game all of my life as a teacher and competitive player. I have conducted numerous golf outings, camps, clinics, and I am passionate about working with adults as well as juniors. I have made a serious commitment to never stop learning and expanding my knowledge of this great game. I am passionate about sharing my knowledge and growing the game of golf. Let me coach you through the four stages of golf potential and enable you to reach the top - playing your best!

I went to the driving range today and practiced hinging my wrist above the ball-- it was great! Thanks for being an expert diagnostician. It was always fun working with you.
Mike is a an excellent coach. On my first lesson he was able to pin point the main problems I was having with my golf swing. He uses the latest in golf swing analysis to assist. Do not hesitate to call Mike if you new improvement in your game.
My 8 year old is learning golf with Mike. Mike knows how to teach children for sure. Very professional and things are going well. Others at the golf course also speak highly of his teaching skills.
Mike was great, knowledgable, easy going, patient and best of all called me an athlete (what more could you want :-) ). Highly recommended :-)
Mike was great, his simple tips n tweaks actually make a difference on your swing.
So far I'm really enjoying my time with Mike. He has a nice laid back approach and I like the direction he is taking me. Obviously, after only two sessions it's hard to rate my overall progress so, we'll have to see where this leads.
Pleasure to work with and think he will be very helpful.
A good listener and instructive. Bottom line is being able to walk away with some tips on how to improve my putting, which is what happened. Had a good time.
Not sure where to start! My husband and I were both fortunate to have Mike share his amazing abilities with us. We each had our individual needs, habits to break & desire for improvement. Mike's ability to adjust his teaching to our very different skill levels, his patience, and his goal being our goal ; for both of us to be able to enjoy golf and the time it gives us together. Mike a huge thank you for your part in adding to our love for golf as we enter into our new chapter of retirement.
Mike is very knowledgeable and very friendly. The lesson was geared to what I needed and I felt I picked up many tips for improving. Mike makes the lesson fun and enjoyable.
Mike was great. He gave me enough things to work on that really made a difference without overwhelming me. Very patient, he is able to explain changes in ways so I can even understand why I should make them.
He made adjustments to my grip and feet that helped my drive and second shot. I liked the simple step by step instruction. He has a positive encouraging teaching style.
My lesson was great from start to finish.
Mike is a great teacher and extremely patient. For somebody who is just starting out, I immediately fell in love with the game mostly because of Mike's teaching technique. He makes it super simple to understand the concepts. Looking forward to more sessions.
Mike, thank you! I'm at a loss for words to describe how good you are. I think you are an excellent teacher who is patient and creative enough to find the best way to help your students. We are so lucky to have you at St Davids.
You’re an awesome teacher, thanks for helping so much in my continuous improvement, I’m a much more confident player today than I was in May.
Mike is an exceptional golf instructor with extensive experience and carefully thinks through solutions before offering to the student. He's taught me a number of difficult shots that have saved me strokes in my game. He's also very innovative and understands modern motor learning and practice techniques. He doesn't hold to one swing model...he fits his instruction to the student's skill level and physical abilities.
Thank you so much for the lesson and the awesome notes you emailed me. I feel great about Mondays outing and know that I will do the best that I can.
Mike, I really appreciate the lesson on no notice. It was a tremendous help. The follow-up images you sent are perfect. I'm very impressed with your ability to focus in quickly on the adjustment and the resulting benefit. After we finished, I took a break and then went back out and hit more balls for 30 minutes. The ball striking was really solid. Can't wait to continue to work on it and to see how it will feel on the course.
Mike, just want to say thanks for your insights on my swing. I appreciate the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach to improvement. You’ve added to my confidence in knowing that (at least for now) my grip, stance and alignment are providing a reliable platform to build on. I look forward to continuing to work with you on maintaining progress on the long game and kick starting a major improvement on the putting and short game.
Thanks so much Mike. You have really helped me enjoy this game.
I was playing a round of golf on Sunday and started to put in place the changes that you have made in my game and I am very pleased, thank you so much!
I had my best round ever today and my score is definitely due to your good instruction. Thank you for your patience with me throughout this process!
Until my lesson with Mike yesterday, I was seriously considering quitting golf. I think it was the best lesson I’ve ever had.
Michael is a great asset to St. Davids Golf Club. He has earned the admiration and respect of our members through his fantastic client service skills, integrity and high level of commitment. Furthermore, he is a fantastic golf instructor and coach who has a large following of clients at all levels of the game.
