More About Coach Michael

I've been coaching youth soccer since 2013, currently with Joe Palumbo Soccer Academy & Just Play Soccer Club with kids ages 5-16 I've coached in the Westchester Youth Soccer League and the New York Club Soccer League. I currently coach a 2008 WYSL team, a 2008 NYCSL team, and I train 2006 & 2007 Premier teams.

I played Division 2 Soccer at Saint Thomas Aquinas College. Started every game (15) as a Freshman and ended up scoring 27 goals in 40 appearances throughout my 4 years. After college I competed semi-professionally in the Cosmopolitan League with Lansdowne Bhoys and in the National Premier Soccer League with Kingston Stockade FC and Clarkstown Eagles. In July 2018 I signed a contract to play professionally in Sweden for Grythyttan IF. We ended up winning the league also earning automatic promotion. Although I’m still pursuing my playing career I am also deeply passionate about helping players improve and gain confidence to compete at higher levels.

A client can expect a well planned, skill appropriate session. I will assess each client for the first few minutes to really pinpoint what needs to be worked on and we will build from there. Once I get to know my client a proper session plan will be written up prior to each meeting. I can improve a player in any aspect of the game: dribbling, passing, attacking/finishing, trapping/receiving, defending, speed, agility, fitness and even goalkeeping. I truly have a passion for the game so my sessions are always intense but very beneficial.
1 HOUR SESSION PLAN
- Each session will start with a warmup (dynamic stretching, agility station, ball work)
- After the warmup I will usually move on to some ball work. Creating a dribbling course with multiple cones, I walk the player through different dribbling techniques, when to use each part of the foot, and how to adjust the body accordingly.
- Working off of dribbling with close control, I will move on to a passing & receiving station in which I focus on different ways to receive the ball and how to properly pass. Depending how advanced the client is, we can also work on accuracy/weight of the pass.
- Receiving and finishing will be the next station. The player receives a pass from me, dribbles through gates, passes back to me, sprints into space, I lay it off and they shoot.
- Close the session out with a fitness/finishing drill. Line 6 balls up and 2 separate sets of gates to dribble through before shooting (2 gates on the left & 2 gates on the right). Dribble through two gates, left or right, and finish. Sprint to next ball immediately after shooting. Shoot all 6 balls in under 2 minutes.
