More About Coach Matthew

Coached at the high school level as an assistant at both Xaverian Brother High School in MA, and St. Peter's Prep in NJ. Currently, coaching club lacrosse with Building Blocks Lacrosse (BBL) out of Madison, NJ. Work all age groups, mostly youth to high school (beginner to expert).

I was an Eastern Massachusetts all-star, awarded 1st team Catholic Conference twice, and 2-time all county player while in High School at Xaverian Brothers in MA. Attended Assumption College, was a 4-year starter for both football and lacrosse teams. I was the 2005 recipient of Rev. Alfred Berthiaume, A.A.`32 Memorial Award for going "above and beyond". Named team captain of the lacrosse team in 2008.

I'm a big proponent of breaking down a technique into its simplest form. Start slow, until proper technique is achieved, and then bump up the intensity until the student has reached his/her full potential. For example, if a player is a beginner and learning how to catch. I'd start by making sure their stick was upright/open to me. We'd practice catching in a static stance as I throw underhand, then walking towards me, jogging, lastly running, etc. For expert level players, I'd practice at full-speed, incorporate cones, or even a net depending on their position, and include movements they may experience before catching the ball (i.e. a defenseman banana curling away from the goaltender to catch a pass to clear the ball).
