More About Coach Marco

I spent the Fall of 2016 as a Graduate Assistant Coach for the Claremont-McKenna Men's Soccer Team, and I will continue in this role throughout the Spring 2017 season. I was also one of four head coaches this past summer at the Panther Soccer Camps in Orange County, and I worked with the Varsity coaching staff of Villa Park High School to help run their summer training sessions. Additionally, as a former team captain for my club, high school, and college soccer teams, I have organized and run many preseason/off-season training sessions during my career. I am open to working with any age group and can do both 1-on-1 and group sessions.

I was a 4-year starter and 2-year captain for the Chapman University Men's Soccer Team in Orange, California. I lead the Men's Team in scoring each of my last 3 seasons as a midfielder and was named to the All-Conference 1st Team in 2014, 2015, and 2016. From the Chapman Athletic's Department, I was honored to receive the 2016-2017 Men's Scholar Athlete of Year award, and from the Men's Soccer Program I received the Player of the Year Award in 2014 and the Offensive Player of the Year Award in 2014, 2015, and 2016. Nationally, I was humbled to be named to the NSCAA All-West Region Team in 2015 and 2016. Thanks to my academic success, I was also a two time Academic All-American and named an NSCAA Scholar All-American after my senior season. In addition to playing at the collegiate level, I have experience in the Premier Development League (PDL) as a starter for Orange County Soccer Club U23s during the summer 2017 season. I also have played abroad in Italy (during my study abroad semester in the spring of 2016), Brazil (as part of Division III Team USA in the summer of 2016), and Jamaica (as part of a Charity Event for the Game of Life Foundation).

As the smallest player on every team I've been on, I've relied on touch, quick thinking, and speed of play to have success, and those are the three main traits I try to emphasize in my training sessions. I always start and end my sessions with a soccer-specific warm-up/cool-down to prevent injury and prepare the athlete's body for performance and recovery. In the first segment of my sessions, I try to maximize the player's touches on the ball through juggling, dribbling, and trapping drills. In the second segment, I focus on passing and decision making with drills that challenge the player's passing accuracy as well as mental sharpness. Lastly, the third segment of my sessions include position-specific drills such as finishing/shooting for strikers and 1v1 defending for defenders. If the player is interested in improving fitness (speed, strength, and/or quickness), I may also end a session that way. Overall, I try to keep the drills simple (and fun) while maximizing the amount of touches on the ball. I am also able to go over tactics and movement off the ball if the athlete feels that will help improve their game. Obviously, my sessions vary depending on the age, level, position, and desires of the player, but my goal with every individual is to make sure they enjoy playing the beautiful game and leave each session a better player.
