More About Coach Lee

My name is Lee and I'm the Head Coach of a Boxing Club. I began Martial Arts and Boxing as a teen in Brooklyn NY and until this day I workout and train in those disciplines thus making me an active Coach.

I attended College in Raleigh NC and upon leaving came back to NY and landed a job as a Trainer at Bally's Health Club teaching different types of Group Fitness classes. After two years at Ballys, I then became a Trainer at NY Health and Racquet Club and later NY Sports Clubs. It was at these two Clubs I introduced Boxing and Kickboxing as alternative fitness workouts. Both clubs still offer these workouts as part of their fitness programs.

In 1996, I was offered a Job at Kingsway Boxing Gym as a Kickboxing /Boxing Trainer. In 1998, I developed the Team Freeform Boxing/ Kickboxing Club. Although I train many guys, my specialty is training women. My women's team has won 20 NY Golden Gloves Championships, Numerous National and Pan Am Titles. In 2002, I prepared 3 women for the American Team participating in the first Women's World Games. This was the tournament that put the wheels in motion for women competing in the 2012 Olympics. That same year I was also offered a job at the famed Gleasons Gym coaching women at that gym and bringing them to Championship status.

I have been featured in GQ, Men's Journal and Time Out magazines. Select women from my team have been featured in Elle, Jane and King Magazine to name a few and have appeared in numerous NY Daily News articles. My women's team has also been featured on Oxygen TV as well as MSG Sports and the History Channel.

As a Coach, I train people on the fitness, recreational and competitive levels. I also train my clients according to their personal objectives because everyone's needs are different. My training methods are based on hard work and developing knowledge of the sport.

Trained 3 Women for the 2002 World Games

First session begins with an orientation to evaluate your physical shape through basic calisthenics exercises. From there we work on your stance, balance and basic footwork, followed by the basic Jab.

Second session on we begin training with a light jog or jump rope followed by basic shadow boxing. Once the body is warm, we move on to the floor and focus on basic footwork i.e. movement. Next would be conditioning training via 10-15 minutes of calisthenics exercise. This includes exercises such as push-ups, sit-ups, squats, calve raises etc. From there it's to the heavy bag developing your basic punches. In the beginning it's simple the basic jabs and right hand. As one develops, more punches are added along with defensive techniques. We would then finish with a cool down techniques and stretching.

As one progressing different bags (such as the speed bag and top and bottom bag is added) along with pad work. Once one's skills are intermediate, it's to the ring for sparring ... Only if that's ones objective.

Client Reviews

Lee Shabaka has changed my life physically and mentally. Speaking from experience, I came to Lee as a fighter just getting by on guts and brawn alone. Lee has helped me develop from a brawler into a skilled and refined boxer in a short time. I went on to become nationally ranked and win the Golden Gloves in Madison Square Garden, something I only dreamed of achieving as a young boxer. Lee helped make this dream come true.
Lee is one of the best coaches I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I am a witness to him coaching boxers from the local level to the national and international level of competition. He is very well researched and open to learning new ideas. This makes him a great coach.
I started to train with Lee Shabaka shortly after I decided to be a competitive boxer. I heard about all the female champions that Lee has trained and figured he must be doing something right. So I decided to give it a try. After training with Lee for a year I have come to understand why he has trained so many champions: (1) he’s brilliant, (2) he’s honest and (3) he’s created a team. Lee really understands boxing and is able to convey his knowledge to others effectively.
Lee’s methods will get you into great physical shape, that’s a given. But what you don’t expect, if you’re not coming to him from a fighting background—which I wasn’t—is what the work will do for you mentally.
There is no ritual, it’s distinctly western in style. The rhythm is all boxing-bobbing, weaving, feinting, ducking, moving, always on your toes.
