More About Coach Karlynn

I am a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, specializing in Performance Enhancement Training. I have six years of coaching experience at the high school and middle school levels. My first three years of coach was for Club Solano Volleyball. I was the assistant coach for an 18’s team for one year and head coach of an 18’s team for two years. After that I took a break from coaching and refereed high school volleyball for three years. I feel the time I spent as a referee enhanced my coaching skills. I was able to see the game from a different perspective and gained a better appreciation for the sport. I stopped refereeing because I wanted to get back into coaching high school volleyball. Shortly after I finished refereeing I received an opportunity to coach a girls junior varsity team at Encina High School in Sacramento CA. Many of the students at this school had never played the sport of volleyball so my approach to coaching them had to be different from my previous coaching job. I focused more on skilled development, making sure they had a great volleyball foundation. After coaching junior varsity for one year, I was promoted to the varsity coach and I held that position for two years. In my last year of coaching the girls’ team at Encina High School I started a boys volleyball program. This was the first boys’ volleyball program at the school and I felt because of the student interest I would make sure they had a program before I left the school. Since then I have helped out at various high school and club volleyball clinics.
I typically work with high school boys and girls, but have no problem working with younger age groups as well.

In high school I received honorable mention both my junior and senior years. While at Solano Community College I received honorable mention my first year and second team all-league my sophomore year. While at Sacramento State I played on their Women’s Club Volleyball team for three years. All three years I made second team all-league. Now that I no longer compete at the collegiate level I play in local adult leagues to keep my skills sharp.

During a workout session I would focus on skill foundation and then build on their skills from there. This is especially important if the athlete is new to the sport. It also helps to reinforce technique with the advanced players; all advanced skills are based on those basic skills and movements. If the athlete is in their season I would ask if there was anything their coach felt they needed to improve on. For example if serving is the skill that needs improvement we would begin with some serving warm-ups. One that I particularly like is down ball hitting at the 10-foot line. As the athlete became more comfortable we would take 3 steps back and continue hitting down-balls over the net. Focusing on arm position, the toss and foot placement. Once we reached full court and the athlete was experiencing success (10 served balls over and in the court), I would take and quick break and discuss the next drill. We would continue serving and add in moving into defense. This would make it feel more game like. I would let the athlete serve a few in then add in passing a down ball and free-ball. I want the drill to be as close to a game like situation as possible. I would end the drill by having the athlete successfully serve and pass 5 points. A point would be the result of a serve over the net and in and a passed ball to the target or setter. If there was time I would also add in hitting a ball back over the net. The athlete would serve the ball, pass it to the setter then hit a down-ball over the net. Before ending the session I would want to talk about what we worked on and ask the athlete how they felt.
If the athlete was not in season I would first ask what the athlete’s goals were, what they expected to achieve from the session(s). I would then do some quick drills that would allow me to assess each of their skills. The first drill would be down-ball hitting at 10-foot line and slowly step back to the end line of the court. This would give me an idea of their hitting ability and serving ability while also warming them up. Next would be a serve receive drill. I would toss a ball over the net and watch how they pass, move their feet and react to the ball. Next we would do some hitting. I would toss or set a few balls to different areas on the court (front row and back) so that I could watch their approach and arm swing. Lastly I would want to see how they transition from offense to defense. To do this I would have them stand at the net, block then pull off the net, pass and hit. We would do this from every position on the court. Once the session was complete I would discuss with them the skill I felt they needed to focus future sessions on.

Very satisfied

Great coach! Very patient and clear.

My daughter really enjoyed her first session with Coach Karlynn! Coach knows her stuff and already helped my daughter with new techniques. Looking forward to the rest of the sessions!

Coach Karlynn made my daughter feel really comfortable and put the time to good use!

Coach Karlynn was very helpful to my daughter Abigail. She put the smile back in my daughter's face about Volleyball and is excited to learn more and more from each practice again.

Thank you Coach Karlynn for the great training session. My daughter left feeling excited and much more confident with hitting and jump serving - something she hasn’t done the entire volleyball season. Looking forward to more training with you.

We just talked about getting my daughter some training. She was polite and knowledgeable concerning volleyball.

My daughter enjoys working with Coach Karlynn. She's shy and takes a while to warm up to people she does not know.
They get along just fine and my daughter felt the workout session was worthwhile and helpful.

My daughter thought she was encouraging and supportive. She has tryouts next week and is ready for second session. We decided to sign up for a coaching session so my daughter could improve her overhand serves. Coach Karlynn also worked on other skill sets during their session.

I learned new techniques from Coach Karlynn and gained the confidence that I need in order to tryout for volleyball through her encouragement and coaching.

My daughter has completed two sessions with coach Karlynn and we already see improvement in her hitting. We would definitely recommend coach Karlynn.

We love coach Karlynn! My daughter went 2 yrs without playing and is barely starting her first year in club play at 14 yrs old. Karlynn is super patient and helpful in all aspects of the game.

My daughter has enjoyed her sessions with Coach Karlynn. I would highly recommend her to other parents looking to develop their children’s skill set.

Coach Karlynn is a thoughtful and responsive coach. I like that she is understated and meets the athlete where they are as she keeps up with their drive to excel. Coach Karlynn assesses the athlete at the initial session. Coach pays attention to the capacity of the athlete and tests their willingness to push to the next level. No reflection on Coach Karlynn, but I am disappointed that when you search for coaches, Coach Up has her buried in their feed as they typically promote others. You have to make a few attempts to find her, or search her by name. I hope that Coach Up provide a more equitable way for newcomers and established customers to access her information. Coach Karlynn has a excellent skill set that she draws from, providing on-point technical and conditioning advice.

Coach Karlynn helped me a lot with my hitting and serving. My training session was great!! I have a lot more confidence.

"Karlynn is patient, encouraging , and thorough."
I am a mother of a 13 year old completely new to this sport and we've only had 1 lesson.
Part of overcoming fear with training a new sport is having a skilled, patient coach with a positive attitude!

Very court aware and coach-able. If you need something done Karlynn is always willing to put in the effort to get it done.
