I have played basketball my whole life and my passion for it has allowed me to have a career in basketball as well. My driving force to be a basketball coach and strength and conditioning coach is my experience as an athlete. I am looking to be the coach I wish I had. Coaches in my basketball career didn't take a holistic approach to sports performance and if some athletes weren't able to keep up they were left behind for the more gifted. The more I learned about the science behind improving your body and skill the more I saw these things start to carry over into my own game.

My goal is to try to improve every athlete whether they are the MVP or got cut last year. Sports performance has so many factors and my aim is to work on all of them including skill development, basketball IQ, athleticism, nutrition, recovery, etc. We are all more than athletes and it is my aim to work with each athlete as an individual and try to guide them for success in all aspects of their life. To be successful in your sport and for it to be sustainable you need to be improving all aspects of your life. I want my athletes to improve their lives on and off the court.

A general template that all sessions will follow includes:
- Warm up (physical, ball handling, shooting)
- Skill Focus (depending on the athlete, isolate the skill)
- Skill Integration (integrate the skill with game-like situations)
- Compete (utilize the skill in a competitive scenario against defense)
- Conditioning (basketball drills designed to increase on-court conditioning)
- Session Breakdown (go over what we learned and big keys to focus on)

The future sessions can then be tailored to the athlete as we build a relationship. We can dive into film breakdown to see what are the biggest weaknesses. We can develop a weekly workout plan that involves guided practices on their own. We will create goals and plans to achieve them. If desired we can also add weight room sessions.

Client Reviews

Coach Shuman did his coaching practicum with me when he was a student at Springfield College. He was a tremendous asset to our program with exemplary knowledge in skill development and strength and conditioning. He is hard working and dedicated to improving the overall student athlete.
I am a current Division III collegiate basketball player. During my junior and senior year of high school, Coach Shuman came onto the varsity team as a student assistant coach. Right away, he was very motivated to help the team succeed in any way he could. He demonstrated great knowledge of the game and its fundamentals, and provided great insight to help us improve. He also took the team through strength training designed specifically for basketball athletes. Although he possesses good knowledge of the game and training, I would argue that his greatest coaching attribute was his devotion to each and every one of us on the team. He truly cared about the team and helping us succeed; he created a strong bond with everyone in the program. It is clear that he knows the game very well, and uses that to help people improve their game. Shuman was a great assistant coach, and I speak for the entire team when I say we were sad to see him go.
