More About Coach Joel

National Soccer Coaching Certifications.

I have played competitive soccer from very young through high school and some college; including player/manager for my adult league team. I have had many mentors who have inspired me to pass on the love of the game through coaching.

I relocated to the Bay Area in 2010 after several years of competitive club coaching in Southern California. I am enjoying developing youth players/teams for competitive Club teams , Varsity High School teams, and through private instruction.

Minor fixes yield major improvements in performance! My sessions are based on observing your games, desired positional growth, body type, and skill level. Your program takes an objective approach, to make you standout in the areas you do well and to bolster the areas that need improvement. I look for ball skills, game speed, touch and perception within the flow of the game. Strength, agility, speed, and precision, are folded into your talents to make you a valuable team member and "game-changer"! Good players need coaches but great players need guides. Which one are you?

My experience has seemingly to be about taking a struggling team and bringing them up in performance/rankings. A couple of recent accomplishments has been bringing SF Convent HS Varsity from last into the playoffs for the first time in 10 years, Waldorf HS Varsity from last to 4th in one season, and taking Mercy HS from last to 2nd in one season. In the youth club system I have brought along my teams playing at the various levels, completed a tournament Championship and a 1st place overall finish in the District Cup.

My focus is on the player, how they can use their player personality and skills to contribute in a team structure, it often transfers into a 1 on 1 session. In that session, we make mechanical adjustments and technical adjustments to enhance confidence and fix problems with muscle memory.

Perfect for competitive players ages 12 and above. Players need to have the maturity and focus to work through individual sessions. Each session is tailored around the needs of the player. I have players ranging from Youth Competitive to Adult.

With 1-on-1, mechanics and technique are the root of improved performance. I find most of my players dramatically improve with minor adjustments and improved muscle memory. Fast players can get faster, foot skills can find new horizons, and attacking/defending skills become more solid with someone who can provide you with another idea, and demonstrate the purpose.

The first part of the session focuses on what you do well and accelerating your proficiency, to eventually place you as a top performer vs. your peer group.
The second part is improving on areas that need immediate improvement.
The last part of the session is challenging you to incorporate the new movement at a higher rate of repetition and bring it up to game speed.

If you are looking for improved performance and game shape, or just want to have more fun playing in league with your peers, we can find a pace that will achieve your goals.

Joel is an awesome coach who knows what he’s doing. Doesn’t matter what position or what you’re trying to improve on he’s the guy to go to!

Joel is and has been great to work with.

I had so much fun during my first session with Coach Joel this weekend. He arrived earlier than our scheduled meeting time, well-prepared with all the equipment needed for the lesson. As a complete amateur, I learned a lot about the fundamentals and foot movements to hopefully play (as more than a bystander) in my corporate team or join a recreational league in the future.

Coach Joel is very patient yet challenging. Looking forward to my next lesson!

Coach Joel is excellent! He communicates very effectively with kids and is a great motivator!

Coach Joel was a very good and creative coach teaching my 8-year old one on one technique. I played soccer for years and I was impressed by the mix of drills and his creativity that he employed in a 1 hour session. Just as importantly, he was very forthright in telling me that it is hard to do a 1 on 1 session with a young player (e.g. he didn't want to waste my money), but he was willing to try. When my player showed some anxiety (e.g. crying), Coach stuck with it, rotated drills, involved me. It was a difficult session, but I got my money's worth. And when my player gets a little more confidence, Coach Joel will be a great option for advanced training.

Excellent experience ... I hope we can continue with more lessons

Coach Joel is a great coach. Teach me a lot!!!

First session was great. Focused a lot on mechanics, something I have never worked on by myself. Movement, balance, positioning. Can make a huge difference in your style. Looking forward to the next sessions.

Coach Joel is very attentive to the needs of the player even after injury. He also takes in consideration posture changes to improve overall skills.

Coach Joel's knowledge of the game is beyond what I've seen from any of my other coaches. I highly recommend him for athletes looking to step up their game to an elite level.

Coach Joel is simply the best! He has been coaching our son for several years both on a team and individually. He knows the game of soccer inside and out. He challenges his players in order to get the best out of them while always being encouraging, patient and fun. Our son's skills have improved tremendously and he knows he is lucky to have a coach like Joel!

Coach Joel*****- From day one knowledgeable, observant, works players to full potential and beyond! Detailed, firm and gentle, and varies work outs- drills, skills, endurance, speed, precision and finesse. Truly loves soccer and is an off the charts coach!! Highly recom'd him but selfishly want to keep him secret so he will still have time for our player!!

I would highly recommend coach Joel. He is currently training my 10 y.o. son once a week. We've had about 5 sessions now. Joel is knowledgable, patient and motivational. Since day one, he's built a good rapport with my son. My son will occasionally goof off and Joel shows a lot of patience and good humor, but quickly brings him back to focus on the training. Joel has been able to highlight some "bad habits" and help my son make adjustments and improve his skills. These improvements have been visible during his recent games. Just this past weekend, my son played two games. In the first game, he played center back (his usual position) and I could see improvements in footwork, speed, accuracy in passing and decision making -- garnering post game praise from his team coach. In the second game, he was played in the center-mid position (nice surprise) and did well with dribbling and use of his body to protect the ball. Most exciting of all was capitalizing on all the training by scoring a goal. Thanks Coach Joel!

I would happily recommend Coach Joel - my son thoroughly enjoyed his session, and came home reinvigorated to work out, work on his ball skills, and looks forward to the next training session in a week!

Coach Joel is great. My son has had 5 sessions so far and his technique and confidence with the ball has already improved a lot. I have seen him try his newfound skills at games and scrimmages. He is always energized and motivated after his sessions.

Coach Joel is great, he has tought me some new techniques that have helped me in my past games. Thanks to Joel I've been doing things different and better than how I've done things before. Joel is not just a coach he is a friend who will help you threw you problems. I would like to invite some people train with Joel because he will teach you like a pro.

Coach Joel is so patient and experienced with kids that my son Steve improves greatly. His coaching is very detailed and scientific. My son is now more confident and enthusiastic as he can control the ball better after only 3 classes. We will continue to book Coach Joel's lessons.

Coach Joel is very attentive and works you hard and smart. Great coach!

Great coach; son really enjoyed the session.

Coach Joel is a great Coach. He pushes you and encourages you in every workout you do. He's always their to help you correct your mistake , and we keep repeating the same work out until we can get the workout right to help improve. He's really a awesome trainer to have. Every time I come out of a training session I feel as if i have improved , even on the smallest things. Thank you Coach Joel.

Joel is such a great coach for my daughter Allie. She improved a lot with her skills and she is more confident now. Joel is patient, helpful, encouraging and a skillful coach. I would highly recommend him to my friends interested in having a personal coach for their kids.

I strongly recommend Joel as a soccer coach. My 10 year old son has improved in skill and confidence which continues to grow with every session. It's apparent that he enjoys what he does and I strongly recommend (and already have) to anyone looking for that extra attention on developing their child's game.

2016 Competitive Coach of the Year Boys Division - District 1
Joel, Thanks for the player assessment - very helpful! We wanted to thank you for another terrific Bolts season.  We've really enjoyed seeing the progress the team has made this year.  We have such a great group of kids and it's nice that they now have a few seasons playing together.  The team means so much to Henry and we really love to see his continued growth as a player and as a teammate.
