More About Coach Jennifer

I am a Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) Certified Distance Running Coach based in the San Diego area. I am also a Licensed Sports Nutritionist, licensed by the National Association of Sports Nutrition, as well as a National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certified Personal Trainer. I have coached individuals and groups, children and adults. In addition, I'm a certified Level I yoga instructor, specializing in vinyasa. I also hold a Masters in Public Health, specializing in health promotion and health behavior change.

Before moving to San Diego, I served as the Director of Marketing and Director of Training Programs at Fleet Feet Sports in Gaithersburg, Maryland. I also helped found, coach and serve on the Board of Directors of Girls on the Run of Montgomery County, Maryland. Girls on the Run is a non-profit educational program that uses running and training for a 5K as a means to educate and prepare elementary school girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. I've been featured on Competitor.com, Runner's World, Women's Running Magazine, Blue Ridge Outdoors, Spa Magazine, Fitness Magazine, Active.com and the Just Finish online running community, and I served as the local Washington, DC-area running expert known as the D.C. Running Examiner. I am now happy to be the San Diego Running Examiner.

Since I first started running in 8th grade, running has been a constant in my life. Over the years, I have competed in numerous races from 5K to marathon distance, including ultramarathons. I've also tried my hand at triathlon, competing in a few Sprint and Olympic distance triathlons. I love the atmosphere and energy at races, as well as the camaraderie found throughout the running community. While competing races is fantastic, helping others reach their goals and experience that feeling of amazement and accomplishment is just as rewarding. Typically, private coaching sessions include a detailed consultation to go over history, goals, expectations and past problems with training. I perform running form analyses, identifying potential areas of improvement. From the consultation, I design a detailed training plan to help the client reach their goals. Once a training plan is developed, we meet to complete one training run together a week (or however often the client would like). Private coaching sessions include speed work, running form drills, long runs (that can be completed within an hour) and more. Basically, private coaching sessions can include whatever workout that will best help the client reach their goals.

I feel privileged to be a part of a client's journey from beginning to end. I have worked with individuals of all abilities, from the beginning runner to the very experienced runner looking for a new challenge or to reach a new goal. I know that my years of coaching experience, personal running experience, and educational background can help you reach your goals and I will do my best to get you there!

I started running track and field in the 8th grade. I was primarily a sprinter and I also did the long jump. After high school, I developed a love for distance running. Over the years, I have competed in numerous races from 5K to marathon distance, including ultramarathons. I've also tried my hand at triathlon, competing in a few Sprint and Olympic distance triathlons.

Working with a new athlete always begins with a consultation to go over running history, any past injuries or problems and what the athlete is currently up to in terms of workouts. We will also discuss goals and expectations and how the new training program will meet those goals. After the consultation, I typically perform a running form analysis and determine areas of improvement. Once the initial logistics are finished, we are ready to start our workouts.

Because the goals of athletes differ, my sessions differ as well. My sessions will always be geared towards the specific needs of the athlete. From beginners to experienced runners, we will do whatever workout will best suit your needs as a runner. Sessions may include long, slow runs (up to an hour in length), easy runs, speed work, proper stretching techniques, strength training, agility/flexibility work and more.

She’s a great coach. I feel so much stronger and I am enjoying running more than I ever have in my life!

Coach Gill taught my daughter a ton about running in an hour. She is amiable, knowledgeable, and efficient, a great combination. I have already booked the next session.

Jenn is a terrific coach!

Jennifer is excellent! She is a great communicator, realistic yet encouraging and organized goal setter and wicked nice!

Jennifer is extremely nice and personable and gave me such great advice just on the first session. Glad I'm taking this next step in my running and getting a coach to train me better techniques, someone to help me make adjustments to prevent injuries down the road, and someone to also keep me accountable to make sure I improve and achieve my personal goals. Definitely looking forward to my next session!

Coach Jennifer is an amazing coach! She is sincere, sensible, diligent and ultra supportive. She plan's my workouts and takes all the guessing out of my program. She's helped me with my form. She very informative about proper diet and training philosophy. My pace continues to improve under coach Jenn. I would highly recommend her to anyone who is trying to improve their running from begginers to running veterans.

Our first meeting went very well. Jenn hit on all the key points that I was hoping for in getting me on the right track to successful running. I've already put some of her suggestions to work, and I'm looking forward to our next session.

I felt very comfortable with Jenn from the start. She was very knowledgeable on work outs, nutrition, stretching, recovery. She was very thoughtful and definitely addressed my concerns about my training, e.g. run faster and enjoying my run more. I think her background on sports nutrition and yoga definitely was what I was looking for. Very excited to keep working with her in the future.

I am still in shock that I ran 3.1 miles today when I could barely breathe 10 weeks ago running for only 1 minute! Thank you for your excellent training program and answers to all my questions so I could be successful in this event. I am so proud I was able to not only finish, but to run without walking!!! I never imagined in my wildest dreams I would run a 5K at the age of 50 without any prior running experience. Thanks for making memories with me!
Participating in Coach Jenn's program was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I feel so good about myself and what I have accomplished. I learned that I can push myself just a little bit at a time and I will become stronger. I learned that with the encouragement of a coach and the camaraderie of fellow beginning runners, the previously imagined impossible feat became easier. No matter how much my muscles and joints ached or how difficult a run may have been, I always felt exhilarated at the end. I couldn’t stop thinking about my next run and whether I could do even better. Never in my wildest imagination would I have thought that running 2 miles would be my easy run for the week. Now as I chart my progress I am in awe to see the weekly mileage progress from 4-5 miles of mostly walking during the first few weeks of the program to almost 11 miles of mostly running as the training program ended. Coach Jenn’s unwavering encouragement, leadership and motivation were instrumental in my success. She always made us believe in ourselves. Forever more when I hear the Theme from Rocky I will remember Coach Jenn cheering us on as we made our way along the route. As I struggled to tackle hills that looked to me like Mount Everest, I heard Coach Jenn’s voice saying “the only way to get better at the hills is to do the hills,” and she was right. I feel confident that my first 5K race this past weekend will not be my last. Whether I will progress to a 10K remains to be seen, but now I have the confidence to know that I can do anything as long as I retain the perseverance and patience that I learned from your program. My only regret is that the program has ended. I am happy to know that Coach Jenn offers many other opportunities for us to continue in our newfound love of running. Thank you for all that you do for the community!
After several years of running a variety of distances with mixed results, I decided that I needed help from a qualified running coach. Jenn Gill, who is RRCA Certified, has worked with runners of all levels. She listened to my experiences and goals, taking the time to review everything about my running history. Besides developing a detailed training plan tailored to my needs, she also provided written regimens for strength- and cross-training. She reviewed and corrected my running form, helped me modify my plan as necessary during the training period, and was available for me at any time for questions or advice by email, text or phone. Jenn clearly cares about her clients and is supportive in every way, which is very different from coaches who use boilerplate training plans and have little interest in personalizing a plan based upon strengths and weaknesses. Jenn's approach and demeanor made me feel as though I had her cheering me on, every step of the way, no matter the distance or difficulty of the race. Her Sole Health and Wellness programs are worth every penny and investment of time.
