More About Coach Duane

Over the past 20 years, I have worked directly with athletes engaged in numerous competitive sports at all levels including age group, high school, college, professional, and Olympic. These athletes have been from across the United States as my work has been both face to face (Utah and Texas) as well as over phone and Skype. Much of my efforts today are with high school and college age athletes. I'm a licensed mental health professional.

As a track and cross country athlete, I had to find my own path from 10 minute miles to running 4:20 miles. This improvement was the result of both physical and mental training. Then I took a turn that had both short and long term consequences for me. I quit. I was burned out and I had too much of my identity tied up in being a runner and did not respond well to being injured. The highs and lows have fired my desire to assist athletes in not only improving their mental game but to also maintain a positive perspective while seeking excellence in their sport.

People around you have been telling you to "calm down" or "fire up" but no one has given you a clue of how to do that. My approach is both educational and experiential. The education piece is to help you to understand what works and doesn't work for you in terms of your mental approach to performing, then to teach you the necessary mental and emotional skills so you can perform at your best when it's important to you. The experiential part is exercises that are designed to lock in the behavior of what you have just learned. We will practice during the session and I'll provide homework assignments for you between sessions. Just like you practice various skills in your sport it is necessary to practice the mental skills so can let your body do what it already knows how to do without your mind getting in the way. The focus of sessions typically includes the development of a competitive mindset and understanding what being nervous is all about and how to use it to your benefit.

We actually used to have a sports psychologist on staff a year ago, but they were not very effective and could not connect with our athletes from an athlete's perspective. I was not impressed with their impact on the athletes or their ability to teach them how to achieve change. I have always had a hard time with my nerves. While I have competed at the highest levels in track I never felt like I was good enough. I was top ten in the world and yet before races, the only thing I thought about was how much better the other runners were than me. I felt like an imposter, that some cosmic screwup landed me here in this race with these monsters. In talking with Duane, he was able to help me see how I was sabotaging myself and we broke it down what to do about it. I now have a better understanding of the purpose of my training and the importance of how my focus on doing all the little things is how I continue to improve my running. My mindset has turned around 180 degrees, before races I now know that I'm the beast and that I'm going to make the race miserable for everyone else who made the mistake of showing up. My times have improved, but more than that I enjoy running and being a competitor again, it's me against the world.
When I first met Duane I was a disaster. I had been injured two months earlier and I was hating my life with a passion. I had been doing great before blowing out my knee on a needless slide tackle. I hated the physical therapy process, to not being able to compete at practice or in games, to the isolation I felt from my teammates, the not knowing how good I would be when I was able to play again, and how long this would all take to be over. Duane helped me to accept that although this situation was not of my choosing and while it was bad I was making it worse with my mindset. We worked out a plan that focused on what I could do to improve the situation every day and found some things I could do that engaged me daily that gave me some meaning for what I was doing with my life, not just being a soccer player
Duane, as you know I have been a dominant baseball player at every age group while growing up. I loved it in part because it came so easy. I got the Division I college scholarship I had always dreamed of and then everything seemed to fall apart. Not only could I not get anyone out, but they were also hitting rockets off me like it was batting practice. You helped me understand what was going on, that now everyone has as much or more talent than me. That my level of commitment had to change and needed to start to use my head as much as my body. I didn't like this at first, but now it's more fun to be a pitcher rather than a thrower. I feel like I now understand my mental game and I can WIN IT!
Due to Duane's sessions, I was able to able to organize my thoughts, manage my time, and feel more confident going into competitions. I truly wouldn't have been able to make it as far as I have without his exceptional expertise. Now I am able to use the power of visualization to better my jumps. I set the bar higher for my competitors because I am mentally tougher and more focused. Duane allowed me to tap into potential I didn't know I had and the sessions allowed me to work on weaker muscles and make them stronger.
As a college football player, I'd be the first one to tell you that I didn't buy into this sports performance stuff until I started struggling on the field. It seemed like the harder I tried to play better the worse I did. I was angry at the suggestion I talk to you, but I am so glad I did! I've always had a lot of potential, but potential is a scary word if nothing ever comes from it. You really taught me how important your head is in this game and how to play mentally tough. My attitude has turned completely around. I don't worry about messing up the way I used to. I don't worry about dropping the ball anymore and I now have the tools to excel like I always knew I could. Even I recommend you to some other players and I can't tell you how much of a compliment that really is!
Duane, I wanted to catch you up on our son's progress and to thank you. While he's always had the talent and willingness to work hard, up until this point perfectionism had been his worst enemy. He truly was his own worst enemy. Your working with him and teaching him to concentrate and let go of mistakes has given him freedom. Basketball has become fun to watch!
