More About Coach Drew

I have over 15 years of experience coaching and training endurance athletes. I have coached age group athletes and professional triathletes. I have worked as a coach and trainer for Columbia Personal Training for 10 years as well as over 30 years of experience coaching for the US Dept of Defense. My primary experience is working with first timers and age group athletes. My experience in coaching ranges from the Sprint length tri to IronMan length tri's. I have a MS degree in Exercise Science from California University of Pennsylvania and a BS from Towson University. I'm certified as a personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist with the National Academy of Sports Medicine. I can get you to the finish line with a PR in your local tri or Kona. I have coached athletes racing in the Columbia Tri, Irongirl, Baltimore Marathon, Frederick Marathon, Chicago, Boston and New York marathon with a 100% success rate.

I have completed over 50 triathlons to include 5 IronMan tri's. My breath of experience spans over 15 years and during this time I raced nationally and Internationally. I have raced in IronMan Canada and IronMan MountTremblanc and Wisconsin, Lake Placid, and ChesapeakeMan. I cycle over 4000 miles per year and swim 2X per week while leading a masters swim class.

A typical session starts with a through discussion of your goals, the number of hours you have available to train, your experience and your strengths and weaknesses. I perform a static and dynamic movement assessment to determine movement issues using the overhead squat analysis. I also perform an assessment using a body fat analysis tool, sit and reach assessment, balance assessment, and finally a max heart rate assessment on the treadmill. From that I will provide you with a monthly comprehensive training plan designed specifically for you and your race schedule. We can meet weekly to work on the areas you need the most help with. I will swim with you and refine your stroke. I will bike with you and teach you efficient riding techniques and I will run with you either on the track for a tempo workout of distance running. I will be 100% involved in your training and development.

Client Reviews

I retained the marathon training services of Andrew Foehrkolb in order to prepare for the LA Marathon. Drew first consulted with me to evaluate my running experience and encouraged the use of a heart rate monitor. Drew provided a plan for total fitness based on runs (at a target HR) of various duration, sprint intervals and cross training days. He was a constant source of valuable knowledge, always available by email. I successfully completed the marathon, injury free and I still use the principles set forth by Drew in my everyday training. I highly recommend Drew's services. Kelli Golanoski Phd, Laurel, MD
Coach Drew Foehrkolb designed a custom program that not only ensured I had the fitness to complete my first half ironman Eagleman, but also gave me the confidence I needed. He provided a day by day workout guide, one on one feedback sessions, and helpful tips and hints. Under his guidance I achieves my goal and did it without injury. Eric Viglione Reston,VA
I highly recommend Columbia Personal Training Services. Drew Foehrkolb is a patient, enthusiastic, experienced endurance and strength coach. As a cyclist, my training goals were to increase my cycling performance on some upcoming bike events: Pedal Pittsburgh (a 280 mile 5 day bike ride from Frederick, Md. to Pittsburgh, PA), and the Catoctin Challenge (a 2 day charity bike event- starting at Frederick, MD). Andrew explained to me that simply biking more miles was not going to increase my overall speed and performance. He outlined a more balanced approach incorporating core training, flexibility and strength exercises, interval and recovery cycling, and other valuable training tips. The result: my strongest performance in the Pedal to Pittsburgh event (in the 3 years of participation), and a well done 100 mile century ride at the Catoctin Challenge. As a side benefit, I was able to drop 10 lb. of bodyweight, which allowed me to achieve a better strength to bodyweight ratio. Climbing the hills felt easier. Give Colombia personal training services consideration, you should be happy with the results. -Edgar Roeser ( age 59, cycling now for 12 years) Frederick, MD

I had the good fortune of completing my first marathon and Olympic distance triathlon under the guidance and coaching of Drew Foehrkolb. I was scared and naive going into it, but Drew's calm and encouraging demeanor made it all seem possible and within reason. His philosophy of "its better to be 10% under-trained than 1% over-trained" has guided my training up to three years later. His expertise on how to train without over training has enabled me to run 6 marathons, and complete 10 triathlons with minimal injuries. I have taken time to listen to my body, and heed his advice when things were not going as planned. I always hear Drew in my head when I am struggling with gems of advice. Just yesterday, and often times in marathons I repeat to myself, "Your legs may be tired, but your heart and lungs can handle it." It is critical to have a coach who can listen to you, your goals, and what you want your long term health to be. Drew took the time to train me and get me to the start line of each of my races happy and healthy. I was able to train effectively for my first marathon, have a blast doing so, and have the guidance and knowledge of someone who knows the athletes brain. I am truly grateful to Drew for introducing me to endurance sports with such a positive experience. I know it is why I have continued, and been able to get through extremely challenging mental and physical aspects. Aleah Zinalabedene Columbia, MD
I am a veteran of nearly 30 years of athletic activity with emphasis in triathlons and long distance cycling. I have completed many Olympic Distance Triathlons and 5 Official Paris-Brest-Paris endurance cycling rides. In the past, I generally followed my self developed training regimen. At the beginning of 2012, I began following Coach Foehrkolb's training plan in preparation for the Columbia Triathlon in May 2012 and several individual Cycling Time Trials. A detailed daily training schedule was provided on a spreadsheet with specifics on swimming, running, cycling and strength workouts. Each workout was described in detail and was related to the other workouts. Even though the workouts were strictly defined, there was plenty of latitude to adjust workouts according to my schedule or body status. Most informative to me were the strength workouts to improve my core strength and the insights and recommendations regarding recovery, balance, and overall well being. Several preconceptions I had regarding recovery, stretching, and use of heat were radically altered. I completed the 2012 Columbia Triathlon successfully with a good time for my age group. I also was very competitive in the Cycling Time Trials that I entered. I did not incur any training injuries during the period that I adhered to the training program. Overall, I felt more at ease during my training than ever before. I would heartily recommend Coach Foehrkolb to any aspiring athlete who seeks to improve their performance. Max Prola Columbia, MD
Drew coached me for my first marathon. Before I worked with him, I had run a few shorter races, but my training was haphazard and unfocused. Without his encouragement and guidance, I would not have even attempted the marathon. He gave me a detailed training plan each week that was easy for me to understand. He taught me how to do speed workouts on the track and how to progressively build up my long run. I learned how to train consistently. I successfully completed the marathon and had a wonderful experience. Drew got me hooked on the fitness lifestyle! Lizzy Cowan Columbia MD
