More About Coach Debbie

I am a U.S. Figure Skating Registered, and Professional Skater's Association CER Category A Coach. I have coached sectional, regional and state champions and medalists, U.S. National competitors and US Figure Skating Gold Medalists. I am staff coach with St. Paul Figure Skating Club, and specialize in coaching beginning and developing level skaters to learn how to become successful competitive figure skaters. I also teach skaters who are interested in developing skills for their own personal enjoyment including all ages of children and adults. I coach freestyle, moves in the field, off ice jump technique, conditioning, and off ice jump harness, as well as recreational skating skills.

I was a competitive figure skater for 10 years, competed at the U.S. Figure Skating Junior level and trained at the Broadmoor Skating Club in Colorado Springs, CO under Olympic Coaches Carlo and Christa Fassi.

Each session is highly tailored to the level of the skater from first steps on the ice to competitive figure skaters doing jumps and spins. Typical lessons include:

Beginning level: Begin by working on basic skating skills such as developing balance, learning to safely fall and get up, learning to glide and how to use the edges of the skating blade as they learn to skate forward and backward. As lessons progress skaters are taught to develop edges and how to gain speed from edges and stroking. Skaters are taught first basic turns from forward to backward and backward to forward on two feet then on one foot. For a beginning level skater (especially young children) a strong emphasis is placed on developing enjoyment for the sport and having fun on the ice. Games are incorporated with basic drills and exercises to have fun while learning. As skaters progress, we then move on to learning the basics of spinning, first on two feet then on one foot. More advanced spin positions are added as the skater learns new skills. Spinning is also learned to begin the process of learning rotation for jumps.

Coach Debbie is awesome! My daughter is a bit shy and had not taken ice skating lessons for a while. Coach Debbie was very warm and engaging with my daughter and connected with her right away. My daughter now looks forward to lessons and can't wait to get back on the ice with Coach Debbie!

Debbie has be so helpful and encouraging; after years of being off the ice, I can finally get back on with confidence. She is very kind and patient, making sure she explains both visually by example and verbally showing my which part of the skate/leg/body I’m using. Would highly recommend for any age.

My 9 year-old son was excited and anxious about taking skating lessons. Coach Debbie did a great job of connecting with him and calming his anxiety. He is looking forward to more lessons.

Coach Debbie was wonderful! My grandson had only had one time on skates and was four years old when Debbie had his first class with him. He started the lesson not being able to even stand on the skates and was flopping around like a flounder. By the time the lesson ended he could stand on the skates without her holding his hands and keep his balance. Amazing. If you want to gentle kind coach for kid go with daddy Coach Debbie was wonderful! My grandson had only had one time on skates and was four years old when Debbie had his first class with him. Coach Debbie was a great help in polishing my daughter’s skating program. She pinpointed certain parts and showed her how to perfect her moves!

I learned a lot in just the short time I was there and am definitely looking forward to more lessons! I'll keep practicing on improving my balance and form!
