It was great having you here in Hawaii and Wildflower to support me. Thank you! You are the coach who helps athletes make their own tracks. You've made my experiences with triathlon perfect! I was prepared and strong for my first Olympic (Wildflower) and my first Half-Ironman (Honu). As a result, my tri-experience was a good one.

I called Coach Cristin for guidance and direction as she had trained me for a marathon where I ended up qualifying for the Boston Marathon with a 3:10! She made up a great personal training program for me which was specifically designed for an Olympic distance triathlon. I followed her program religiously and did my own research about diet to complement my training. The 10 weeks of training were staggered from 50% to 100% workout weeks. Half way through my training schedule, I was feeling great and pushing myself more and more each week. My swimming was still not where I wanted it to be because open water swimming is much more difficult than swimming laps in pool! After 10 weeks of training hard, eating right my body was ready for race day. Race day came very quickly. I arrived at the event the day before to pick up my race packet and check out the course. Honestly, I had no idea what to expect. I knew I could do the bike and running events, but throw in an open water swim made me uneasy. The question was how I would respond to all three events in such a short time. In all my workouts, not once did I swim, run and ride all in the same day at the event distances. The race was slated to start at 8:00am. I arrived at the transition area at 6:15am and got my body marked with my number, and put on my tracking chip. I took a jog to the pier to see the swim course before I had to swim it. With less than a half hour to start, I was suited up and waiting in a mass of athletes ready to jump into the 54 degree ocean for my first triathlon. However, the start of the race was delayed 1:15 minutes due to fog. This gave me extra time to discuss strategy with Cristin and calm my nerves. The swim started with everyone fighting to get to the front position. Cristin and I decided I should ease in the water and stay right to let everyone get situated. After a couple of minutes, I found myself in a steady pace near the middle of my wave. From that point on, the swim was comfortable. I finished the swim with plenty of energy and made the dash through the T1 area to get set for the bike. The bike ride was the fun part of the race for me. My swim start was one of the final waves so this put me behind nearly 600 people coming into the bike. After about an hour, the other competitors began to thin out, and I found myself paced well with the competitors around me. I finished the bike with enough energy to maintain a strong pace in the run. It wasn't until about mile 5 on the run when I really started to think how all my training had paid off and I was about to finished my first triathlon. I had given it my all and I finished in 2:31:14 (swim 30:49 –T1 4:21 - bike 1:12: 13 –T2 1:20 - run 42:31). I finished 15th in my age bracket and 160th out of 860 participants, far exceeding all of my expectations. Looking back at week one, I can't believe how far I've come with Cristin. It seems amazing that I had just completed a triathlon when just 10 weeks ago I couldn't even swim for more than 2 minutes straight! What a great sport. I look forward to entering another tri sometime in the near future
T.A. (Testimonial)
In July I decided to try my first triathlon. I had done several half marathons and full marathons as well as 50-100 mile bike rides and really enjoyed it. I wanted to challenge my athletic abilities and give me an incentive to work out harder and push myself on a daily/weekly basis. Before training for my tri, my workouts were daily runs on treadmill or rides around Uvas dam. Then, I registered to compete in the Santa Cruz Triathlon.
