More About Coach Brooke

I have worked multiple softball camps for George Mason University as well as other camps in the Northern Virginia area. At camps I was generally teaching the basics of infield defense or working in the cages assisting in teaching children the basics of hitting. I have also worked individually with a few girls who had specifically asked me to after coming to watch some home games.

I was a four year starter for the Division I softball team at George Mason University. I am a utility player, but spent a majority of my years at Mason playing third base. I was put on the all conference first team all four years (two in the CAA and two in the A10). I earned many other honors while playing at Mason, including being put on the NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Second Team as well as ECAC second team. I was a leader on offense and had mid to high 300 batting averages for 3 of 4 years. My sophomore year I led with a .307 batting average. My overall average BA was .354. I broke a school record for all time home runs (25), hitting 9 in my senior year. My overall average slugging percentage was .593.

Depending on the level of play the athlete is at I will focus my session on that. I generally like to watch the player hit or field before evaluating what the focus of each session needs to be. I will do tee work, throw side and soft toss for this evaluation, but will critique as I evaluate. I would work on visualization. Showing each step of a swing as well as where their hands and arms need to be for each pitch location. Once the swing works well and looks clean I will focus more on visualization and giving confidence. The key to good hitting is knowing which pitches to hit and when to swing. For fielding I would begin by teaching them the fundamentals such as footwork and tracking the ball. I would probably show them some of the fundamental drills we worked with at Mason called the Big 4s which are 4 essential infield drills for softball.
