More About Coach Alcides "Tico"

Fun and dynamic volleyball coach with 10+ years of coaching experience. Played volleyball through college and have coached both boys and girls at the elementary, middle school, high school, and collegiate level. Most recently have been the head coach of a girls varsity high school team and head coach of a travel 17's club team. Also, currently a member of USA volleyball and have an Indoor IMPACT/Safesport certification. In addition, I am first aid/CPR certified with a masters in education. Mostly, I have a passion for the sport and teaching it to all aspiring volleyball athletes. *Fluent in Spanish

Was a three sport high school athlete in soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Went on to play Men's Club Volleyball at the University of Delaware.

Athletes who work with me can expect coaching from a foundation of mental preparedness and character development with an emphasis in fundamentals, fitness and competitive game-like drills. The most important part of running a session is getting to know the athlete I am working with to adjust the training specifically to their needs. Each session would include a warm up, lots of touches on the ball, agility training, competitive drills and a cool down.

Client Reviews

Okay it took me awhile to write a feedback because words couldn't describe how excellent of a coach he was the few 5 sessions we had together. First, I would say he is very patient. When I say patient I mean patient. Words my volleyball coach from high school wouldn't understand. But he will work you hard so that if you do make mistakes you can learn from it and become the best. He is very good at spot correcting meaning he knows where the mistakes are in your form or technique. At the beginning of each session he starts off with a quote of the day, which really helped me get in the right mind set. At the end of each session, he will give you useful feedback and words of motivation. I can truly say I benefited from it because I learn how to set, pass accurately, hit and serve. The sessions helped me get ready to play for college, even though I didn't get to play the position I wanted to. I wish I had more time to work with him throughout the season. All around I highly recommend Coach Tico, if you are serious about playing volleyball or improving skills.

Tico was my coach for my four years of high school volleyball, but he acted as a friend, a mentor and a leader, not simply a coach. He cares about a player's development and helps them grow technically, mentally and as a member of a team. Unlike many other coaches I've had, Tico is not overbearing; he is fairly quiet during games, allowing players to take more control and ownership while still providing guidance. He gives you autonomy and trust, asking for respect in return, and form a solid connection with his players. While he does take the game seriously and always wants to win, he is also an upbeat and zesty guy who wants to have fun. When our team wasn't playing our best, he would occasionally tell a corny joke, knowing that enjoying the game is what really matters and that no one plays their best in a bad mood. What sets Tico apart is his attention to detail and mental focus. He prepares every practice beforehand, picking out drills, a quote of the day, the daily focus or target skill and the weekly theme. He taught me that preparation is the key to success and that preparation is as much mental as it is physical, especially in a strategic and technical sport such as volleyball. Tico works with each player individually, getting to know them and finding the most minute errors to change that make all the difference--for me it was the position of my hips when I served and the first step I took when I moved to dig a faraway ball. He teaches life skills and is a model leader, throwing in subtle bits of wisdom such as the importance of goal setting. Tico was no doubt the best coach I've ever had and he helped me improve immensely. Even during my fourth year working with him, I felt that there was much more for me to learn from Tico; I couldn't recommend any other coach more.
