More About Coach Ryland
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
St. John Bosco Lacrosse Coach Named 2014 Man Of The Year
BELLFLOWER, CALIF. â St. John Bosco Varsity Lacrosse coach, Ryland Huyghue, was named 2014 US Lacrosse Man of the Year- Los Angeles Region by LAX Power. Huyghue is heavily involved in the sport of lacrosse and is a huge advocate for the expansion and development of the sport of lacrosse nationwide.
âWe are blessed to have a man such as Ryland Huyghue running our lacrosse program.â said Casey Yeazel, Principal of St. John Bosco High School. âNot only does Coach Huyghue possess unparalleled experience as a player and coach, he is also a man of character that is vested in the formation of his players as young men. The success that Bosco Lacrosse has had this year has surpassed our most optimistic expectations, and is due in large part to Coach Huyghueâs vision and execution. Being named U.S. Lacrosse âMan of the Yearâ in the Los Angeles Region is an appropriate honor for Ryland. On behalf of the entire St. John Bosco High School Community, we congratulate Ryland for this honor.â
As a leader in the sport of lacrosse, Huyghue, has been solely responsible for the partnership of the lacrosse community and the International Diversity Lacrosse Council for over seven years. In being the CEO and Founder of IDLC, he has been committed to increase the education, exposure, experience and participation of everyone in all levels of lacrosse throughout the world.
In addition to spreading the development of lacrosse through IDLC, Huyghue is also a Top 25 Poll Administrator for the Menâs Collegiate Lacrosse Association. The MCLA provides a governing structure much like NCAA, with eligibility rules, All-Americans and a national tournament to decide national champions in both Division I and II. Huyghue is responsible for weekly ranking selections of the Top 25 ranked teams across the country.
As head coach for the 2014 St. John Bosco lacrosse team, he has spearheaded the lacrosse program and coached the team to an improving record this season. He also led the lacrosse varsity to a third place finish in the California State Lacrosse Tournament.
About St. John Bosco High School
St. John Bosco High School is an all-male Catholic college preparatory school in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles with a student body of approximately 800 students, grades 9-12. As a distinctive Catholic college preparatory community in the Salesian tradition, the school educates young men with reason, religion and loving kindness to become men of purpose in the image of Jesus Christ.
Since 1982, I spearheaded the development of lacrosse in California. As a five-time MVP player of Orange County Lacrosse Club, my team won four state club championships and for fourteen straight years I was an all-star club lacrosse player. I was elected as the president of the California Lacrosse Association for twelve years and served as president of the Malibu Lacrosse Club for thirteen years.
I went back into coaching youth football for 14 years with both my sons. I coached my last 3 youth years, with Rap Star, Snoop Dogg and his sons. While coaching youth football, I was then asked to coach with a Semi Professional Football team where I currently head coach six seasons later. We dominated the minor league football for several years, at one point having a record of 66 wins and 8 losses.
In 2009, I was the head lacrosse coach for Cal State Fullerton, where in one season I took the team from losing every game the previous season to a much improved, above 500% season. I coached and produced five All-American lacrosse players, three of which were Academic All-Americans as well.
I made history in 2009 becoming the first African American head lacrosse coach to win a collegiate championship in the sport of lacrosse for Cal State Fullerton. I have also coached UCLA, USC and Occidental College. Maybe my most amazing achievement was my involvement in re-instating exhibition lacrosse in the 1984 Olympics. With numerous meetings with Peter Uberoff and the Olympic Committees, I helped pull off what many thought would never happen and made the Jim Thorpe Memorial Pow Wow & World Games by inviting for the first time the Native American Iroquois to there first World Lacrosse Tournament making it a huge success.
I continue my commitment to lacrosse accepting the head coaching position for the Santa Monica Vikings High School Club Lacrosse team. In only one season, my record took a 5-7 record from the previous season and being ranked 60th in the state, to winning their division and taking a trip to the state championship. Ending the season ranked 4th in the state.
From the age of seven, I have been a star athlete and dedicated to the sports of football and lacrosse. I was the first All-American lacrosse player to come out of my high school, I was also the first African American from Long Island to reach first team All-American Status. In football, I also reached All-American Status. I never came off the field playing running back, strong safety, punter, place kicker, field goal kicker, punt returner and kick off returner. My high school team went undefeated for four straight years. I was inducted into my High School Hall Of Fame as one of the premier athletes to come out of the school. I went to Nassau Community Jr. College playing both football and lacrosse. After becoming the #1 recruit in the country for lacrosse. I turned down several football scholarships from teams such as Ohio State, Iowa State, Rutgers University and several others, choosing to play lacrosse for University of Maryland. I've been inducted into my high school Hall of Fame and recently nominated into the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Also a member of Team USA and played in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

1 on 1 Private Lacrosse Lessons
A one-on-one individual lacrosse lesson consists of either one hour or one and a half hours of work with a IDLC coach. This can happen a few different ways:
Introductory Lessons
If the player is a beginner or new to the game of lacrosse. Introductory lessons are recommended. The student would learn the basic fundamentals of the game. Expect the following:
⢠Equipment Check â evaluation of fit and âplayabilityâ
⢠How to throw and catch properly
⢠How to shoot
⢠Basic dodging moves â split, roll, face, etc.
⢠Basic defense
⢠Basic offense
Advanced Lesson
An advanced lesson is for a player who has been playing for some time and has begun to master most of the basic skills that are offered in introductory lessons. You can expect the following:
⢠Usually involves being paired up with a specific coach geared towards lesson goals.
⢠Developing Lacrosse IQ â situational awareness
⢠Advanced dodging moves â hitch, wind-up, etc.
⢠Advanced passing & shooting â behind-the-back, on the run, hiding the stick, fakes, etc
⢠Advanced defense â zone and man-to-man education, etc
⢠Advanced offense â cuts & picks, offensive sets, etc
Positional Lessons
A positional lesson is key when a player has chosen a specific position (Midfield, FOGO, Attack, Defense, or Goalie), and needs to develop a specific set of skills to improve at the particular position. It will always take place with a coach whose specialty and experience involves that position.

Before I met Coach Ryland, I did not have that much experience with Lacrosse. Despite that, I still wanted to make the Lacrosse team at Chaminade High School. Chaminade has a very competitive lacrosse program and it was going to be challenge to make the team. Through Coach Rylandâs training, I was to improve as a Lacrosse player, but also an athlete. Thanks to his great coaching, I was able to make my High School Lacrosse team.

John (CoachUp client)
Coach was great for my 6 year old....was kind and stern. By the end of our session I saw a nice improvement.
Would love to have my kid coached by him again. Simple, direct and to the point
Larry (CoachUp client)
Coach Ryland is a phenomenal coach, mentor, and teacher. He breaks the game down into its individual components and teaches each separate aspect of the game one by one. In other words, he brings it down to a level where the kids can understand. He keeps things simple and provides a huge amount of tips and tricks as to how your child can be the best and show as the best... stand out among everyone else, be the top 20%. He is worth his weight in gold and has helped my daughter dramatically with both the technical and tactical aspects of the game. We are so upset that Ryland is relocating to the west coast as he is one of those, once in a lifetime teachers and coaches you run into and once you find them you want to keep them. Good luck Ryland, we wish you all the best. Thank you so much for taking my daughter to the next level.

Coach Ryland is an excellent coach. I am so glad my son Jacob was able to get LAX training from him. He was a hands on coach with patience and a general concern for teaching unique techniques while utilizing proper form. He even provided Jacob with recommendations on things to work on in between sessions. I highly recommend Coach Ryland to anyone seeking a knowledgeable LAX coach. He wants to see you succeed. Jacob enjoyed the sessions and I already signed him up for additional sessions. He knows his stuff!!đ

Coach Ryland is an excellent coach! I highly recommend him. My son starting playing lacrosse last year, after never having picked up a stick, and has improved tremendously after working one-on-one with Ryland. He patiently taught him fundamentals, and imparted years of knowledge of the game on him. Coach Ryland helped speed the learning curve and take a first year, JV player, to varsity in his second year. It was a pleasure working with him!

Brad Warmer (Testimonial)
Dear Monty: This past Saturday my 6th grade son, Braden, and I had an outstanding time watching a home lacrosse game. We brought one of my son's lacrosse teammates and his dad with us too. Coach Ryland was the best. He made us feel welcome and our boys had a great time watching on the sideline. It was the first time that I had met Ryland and I was extremely impressed, as was the other dad with me. Ryland is an outstanding coach and hopefully the school plans on ensuring that he is a part of the Bosco's long term plans to grow the lacrosse program and eventually move to CIF status. Best Regards, Brad

To Whom It May Concern:     It gives me great pleasure to write this letter of recommendation for Ryland Huyghue. I have known Coach Ryland for the past 3 years as my son Jonas Harrisâ Lacrosse coach/Santa Monica Lacrosse Vikings and most recently as a private Lacrosse coach and mentor. In this short time, Coach Ryland has been a huge positive factor in my sonâs life. Coach Ryland came to the SM Vikings program and was able to turn a failing program into State Champion contender. Coach Ryland was able to gain the trust of the players and parents through his passion, concern and motivation to be a positive winning program. Through this approach, the program and the boys flourished! It was awesome to be a part of this 2012 program however in the last year, 2013, upon his departure, the team suffered. Team moral and overall sportsmanship was challenged. I was very disappointed to see the departure of Coach Ryland as were many parents and especially the boys, many of whom had personal positive relationships with Coach Ryland. In summary, Coach Ryland came to Santa Monica to grow and develop a positive winning Lacrosse program, which he successfully accomplished. Coach Ryland is a dynamic professional coach with the ability to turn around or take any Lacrosse program to the next level. If I can be of any further help with regards to recommending or supporting Ryland Huyghue for verification of his fine qualities and abilities as a person, please feel free to contact me. Sincerely, Mona Behringer Parent SAMO student/Lacrosse player, Jonas Harris
