More About Coach Matthew

I have played soccer for over 20 years and I continue to play today. I have managed an adult co-ed indoor-soccer team at BlueSky Soccer Center in Allen, TX for four seasons with great success. I completed my U6-U8 U.S. Youth Soccer licensing module on March 20th, 2014 and I also stay busy in the Summers facilitating small-side games with children and adults.

I played recreational soccer from age nine to eleven and then graduated to select/club soccer. I played for Tottenham Hotspur in Allen, TX for four years and Blackwatch Football Club in Mckinney, TX for two years. While playing for Tottenham and Blackwatch, we placed high in the Premier Division. I also played two years of High School J.V. soccer at Allen High School (under Coach Buriwitz and Coach Martinez). I maintained my starting position both years. Again, we placed high both years. After high school, I played in various indoor and outdoor adult leagues and I continue to play in them today. The last team I played for belonged to the McKinney Soccer Association and we took first place in the most competitive Adult Co-Ed tier.

I started playing soccer as a defender and slowly worked my way up to the forward and striker positions. I have a well-rounded understanding of each position, but I have become more offensively inclined over the years. I specialize in the center attacking mid-fielder position and the duties and skills that come with that role. These specific skills include awareness, positioning, anticipation, first-touch ball control, composure, offensive vision, passing and movement, and finishing (scoring). The duties that center attacking mid-fielders are responsible for consist of receiving the ball from defenders/goal kick, turning the ball to keep it moving towards the opposing goal, using give and go/pass and movement techniques, and finally assisting the forwards in their pursuit towards goal all while maintaining readiness to strike on goal from distance if a close-counter attack fails or begins to look unrealistic.
A typical session with me will be one that fits the student's necessity. For instance, if the student would like to work on fundamentals I would introduce all fundamentals, gauge which ones need improvement and use the remaining session to implement a variety of repetition-based drills to help the student move closer to mastering any specific fundamental he/she struggles with. I am also more than happy to end the session by setting up a pattern of drills the student can execute at home. Private tutoring starts on the field, but ends at home.
On the other hand, sessions can focus entirely on one aspect of the game if the student so desires. For example, if the student would like to become a better ball-handler I would gauge his/her current control level and apply the necessary drills to help fine tune from there. I am a firm believer in the power of repetition and many of my personal training sessions include drills which are repeated again and again until progress is made.
The fundamental side to soccer is very important, however over the years I have come to realize that fostering an intrinsic passion and love for the game becomes just as critical in developing a great soccer player. Coaches coach, but passion and love for the beautiful game of soccer keeps players returning to the pitch season after season. During my sessions, I make it a point to focus on teaching mental and physical skills, but I also keep players aware of how to accept soccer for all its glories and challenges.

Client Reviews

Coach Mathew is great at working arround schedules and at explaining and braking down training going on with my child I really like how he made working out with my daughter fun.

While I played for Tottenham, coach Jonny Stark always made it a point to let me know that I possessed a solid center of balance and played with controlled physicality.
