Here are a few tips to help you prepare. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every veteran triathlete was a bright-eyed beginner at one point. Many of them probably even had the same experience with their first race &#8211; gruelling, exhausting workouts, fear and uncertainty about their capabilities, confusion about how and when to train. But just because they dealt with all that stuff, doesn\u2019t mean you have to. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What a lot of people forget about running a triathlon is that it\u2019s actually a lot like any other pursuit &#8211; <strong>what I mean to say is that it\u2019s as much about what you know as it is what you can do<\/strong>. To that end, the more research you do ahead of time, the easier you\u2019ll find the race when you eventually get there. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, in my experience, is some of the most valuable advice I can give. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Planning Your Workouts<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pick a set time every day to do your training &#8211; but remember that you don\u2019t need to train for hours at a time. You can actually make a lot of progress with just a half hour to an hour of effort, provided you train effectively. That said, you should keep your workouts diverse and flexible, as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if it\u2019s raining, you might consider going for a swim or doing cross-training instead of running or biking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another important piece of advice is to <strong>figure out which part of the triathlon is your weakest.<\/strong> Some people are naturally gifted swimmers, but can\u2019t bike to save their lives. Other people are great runners, but useless in the water. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose the discipline that\u2019s the most challenging for you, and focus on training that up more than the others. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. What To Eat &#8211; and When<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter how much you train, if you aren\u2019t eating properly, you\u2019re not going to see many gains. Eat a lot of chicken, yams, potatoes, and vegetables in the days and weeks leading up to the triathlon. And I mean <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lot. <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re going to need a ton of carbs to give you energy, and a ton of protein to help you build up muscle. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. How To Keep Things Simple<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you were a novice programmer, you wouldn\u2019t look at how a veteran works and try to imitate them directly. If you were new to driving, you wouldn\u2019t try to emulate the tricks of a professional stunt driver. In the same way, novice triathletes should not try to copy the training methods of veterans. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep things simple. Find what works for you, and stick to it.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t need to spend a mint on complex training gear, spend hours mastering intensive training methods, or spend days figuring out the perfect combination of supplements. For now, just train. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Breaking Your Mental Barriers<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest challenge in an activity as grueling as triathlon isn\u2019t your body &#8211; it\u2019s your mind. Eventually, you\u2019re going to hit what athletes call the wall. You\u2019re going to feel like you\u2019re completely out of energy; you\u2019re going to feel as though you\u2019ve exhausted yourself and can\u2019t keep going.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trick to success is to convince yourself that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no, you <\/span><strong>can <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep pushing forward. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meditate for&nbsp;20 minutes a day. When you\u2019re working out, listen to music that energizes and pumps you up. Be sure to also visualize yourself crossing the finish line &#8211; and the cheers of your family and friends as you do so. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Bricking<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last but certainly not least, let\u2019s talk about something known as bricking. This technique involves training two disciplines back to back &#8211; cycling and sprinting, for example.
