Plain and simple. Let\u2019s be honest, it <em>is<\/em> about whether you win or lose, not just how you play the game. But there is a line that many parents and coaches cross when it comes to winning. And that line is the difference between <em>winning <\/em>and <em>winning at all costs<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Winning is Okay<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Besides the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachup.com\/?utm_source=social&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_content=home_page&amp;utm_campaign=client_organic\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.coachup.com\/?utm_source=social&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_content=home_page&amp;utm_campaign=client_organic\">winning in youth sports is absolutely fun<\/a>, there are some other reasons that winning is really okay:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It gives players a sense of accomplishment<\/li>\n<li>It gives them a reward for their hard work<\/li>\n<li>It helps teams see what happens when they play together<\/li>\n<li>It encourages kids to continue playing sports<\/li>\n<li>It gives kids <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ssEmQ1Ww3v0\" target=\"_blank\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ssEmQ1Ww3v0\" rel=\"noopener\">motivation<\/a> to seek higher goals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Winning at all Costs is Not Okay<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When winning becomes more important than the people who are playing, then the line has been crossed. Winning at all costs hurts players, parents and coaches because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It places more value on results than on effort<\/li>\n<li>It overlooks kids who give 100% even though it\u2019s not as good as another player\u2019s 50%<\/li>\n<li>It doesn\u2019t care who gets trampled on or left behind<\/li>\n<li>It ignores kids who work hard all season and never miss, and adores kids who show up late and miss way too much just because they\u2019ve got super skills<\/li>\n<li>It worships the score board instead of caring about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coachup.com\/?utm_source=social&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_content=home_page&amp;utm_campaign=client_organic\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.coachup.com\/?utm_source=social&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_content=home_page&amp;utm_campaign=client_organic\">development of each player<\/a><\/li>\n<li>It puts the win above the safety of youth players<\/li>\n<li>It often pushes good players to think they have to carry the team just for a win and thus develops a selfish attitude in them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Winning at all costs may be a win, but it is never a victory in youth sports.
