{"id":2475,"date":"2017-07-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-07-02T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webinology.website\/nation2021\/how-long-should-you-work-out-for\/"},"modified":"2021-11-03T13:00:38","modified_gmt":"2021-11-03T17:00:38","slug":"how-long-should-i-workout-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coachup.com\/nation\/articles\/how-long-should-i-workout-for","title":{"rendered":"How Long Should You Work Out For?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Players ask me this question all the time: &#8220;How long should I work out for?&#8221; I think they\u2019re often expecting me to say something like \u201c2 hours\u201d or \u201c30 minutes of ball handling and an hour of shooting.\u201d But what I usually say is, \u201c<strong>It doesn\u2019t matter<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I usually pause here for a moment to enjoy the confused look on their face. Once I have my fun, I explain that time spent working out shouldn\u2019t be the metric that they\u2019re focusing on. But it\u2019s very natural to do just that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Players tend to focus on length of time for a workout for a few different reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>We have to schedule things in our lives.<\/strong> When players were younger, practice had a fixed start and end time so parents knew when to pick them up. It starts at 3:30 and when 5:30 rolls around, Dad will be waiting in the parking lot. We\u2019ve kept the habit of scheduling workouts as we\u2019ve gotten older because we\u2019ve got other stuff to do.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Length of time is an easy measurement to make<\/strong>. It\u2019s easy to look at the clock and figure out how long your workout lasted.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s easy to exaggerate and distort.<\/strong> If you want to feel like you worked harder all you have to do is take it slow. Check your Instagram, dawdle between drills, don\u2019t tire yourself out with full speed reps, fire off a few texts. All of a sudden, you\u2019ve been in the gym for 4 hours. Wow! You\u2019re such a hard worker! What a great workout! (This might be my single biggest pet peeve. With great difficulty, I\u2019m going to restrain myself and leave it at that. But don\u2019t be surprised if I end up writing a frustrated post about it later.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The problem with using time as a measurement of how good your workout was, is that it doesn\u2019t sync up with what actually makes you better. By the time metric, 10 minutes of lazy reps is just as effective as 10 minutes of high quality reps. And that\u2019s obviously wrong.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What\u2019s the solution?<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>The better measurement isn\u2019t time spent in the gym, it\u2019s the number of high quality reps.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But what does high-quality reps really mean?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the number of reps where you\u2019re in what Daniel Coyle calls \u201cthe sweet spot.\u201d Basically, the sweet spot is where you\u2019re pushing yourself just beyond what you\u2019re capable of. The goal you\u2019re trying to accomplish is just outside your reach. It\u2019s that process of having to dig deep and struggling a little bit.<\/p>\n<p>Another way to think about the sweet spot is how often you succeed.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>The success rate of your reps in the sweet spot is between 50 and 80%.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Any more than that and it\u2019s <strong>too easy<\/strong>. Any less and you\u2019re floundering around helplessly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The amount of reps you can get in the sweet spot should be your metric. This doesn\u2019t mean you have to go to the gym and ignore how long you were there. You can still schedule a 90-minute workout. But <strong>the key is not to use length of time to assess how good the workout was<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A 90-minute workout is only as good as the number of quality of reps you get in those 90 minutes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s why I say \u201cit doesn\u2019t matter\u201d when players ask how long they should workout for.
