But everyone has to do it now and then, some more than others. Losing is simply part of life. Set the example by showing your kids how it\u2019s done, and hopefully they will follow your lead.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Thank the coaches and refs for their work<\/strong>. The game\u2019s outcome doesn\u2019t matter; the refs and coaches&nbsp;did their job and gave their best effort.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be gracious to the winner<\/strong>. If you know them, make a point to congratulate them. If you don\u2019t, you can still go out of your way to shake a player\u2019s or coach\u2019s hand.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t go home and trash talk the opposing team<\/strong>. Or coaches, or refs, or teammates, for that matter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Let your kids lose in peace. <\/strong>Choose words after the loss that won\u2019t stir up frustration or self-recriminations. Empathize instead of critique.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stay positive<\/strong>. Negative attitudes are contagious. As a parent, you have a lot to do with keeping positivity up.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Look for small victories<\/strong>. Find the wins within the losses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Avoid the blame game<\/strong>. <em>It\u2019s the refs\u2019 fault! If only Johnny wasn\u2019t such a ball hog. It\u2019s your coach\u2019s fault; he was outcoached<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t regurgitate the loss<\/strong>. Learn from mistakes, put it behind, and move on. There\u2019s no need to bemoan it over and over and over and make it a bigger deal than it is.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t make light of it<\/strong>. The loss may have deeply disappointed your child. Don\u2019t try to diminish his feelings of grief.
