How To Stay Focused + Have Fun
Staying focused while on the golf course is one of the hardest things to do, no thanks to the long and arduous rounds. From start to finish, a round can take close to five hours, maybe even more. In order to score well and have fun, you’ll need to stay focused the entire round. In this sense, we mean focused as the ability to play freely while also staying in the moment. While this may seem challenging, CoachUp has put together a quick list of three tips that will guide you to a more successful round.
Be Patient, Young Grasshopper
When the pace is slow, people get frustrated! But try only worrying about the situations you can control. Since golf is supposed to be a fun sport, enjoy your time on the course and find activities to do between holes. There are even games you can play while standing on the tee box, all you need is a club and a ball. Pick a target and see who can putt closest to it; or find a tree and see who can race around it the quickest. These games, while unorthodox, will help to keep your mind off the wait time, helping hone your focus and performance for the next shot.
Think Only About the Next Shot
Even for professional golfers, focusing through your myriad of shots can prove difficult. However, if you think just one shot at a time, whether it’s the first hole or the downhill chip shot on the 18th for par, you’ll be able to focus and execute shots with more precision. This philosophy can also be helpful if you've just hit a bad shot. Golfers who forget their bad shots and move on to the next will shoot lower over time. If you keep those bad shots in your mind, you're liable to overcorrect and hit another bad one. By only thinking about the next shot, you're guaranteed put yourself in a better position to succeed.
Talk to Your Playing Partners
While this tip may be a simple one, talking to your playing partners is very underrated. Talking helps lighten the mood and makes for a much more enjoyable experience. Additionally, your partners can help you take your mind off the round when needed. They can also help you focus on the shot at hand by making suggestions on what to play. If you’re not sure what the hole calls for, try discussing with your partner -- even if they’re not your family or friend. We swear, most golf players won’t bite! You might even learn some insight and advice from a partner as well, you never know.

In the end, treating golf as a relaxing, fun endeavor will almost always pay dividends. Keeping your body levels and calmness under control is key -- never get too high or too low. In fact, forget your mistakes the second they happen. Don’t let them fester and burn, moving onto your next shot is the only reasonable choice!
