More About Coach Zach

I was an assistant coach for BGSU Men’s soccer from June 2016- December 2018. During this time I worked with our division one athletes, but also worked with high school aged players via camps and a club team that I coached. I also coached a u9/10 team for the local club, BGSC, during my time on staff. We also ran a recreational soccer league that I was in charge of, which required me to create lesson plans for kids ages 3-14. I have a wide variety of experiences working with ages 3-22. I have my D license through US soccer.

I played for the Columbus Crew’s development academy which allowed me to cultivate my skill in a professional environment, and occasionally train with the Crew SC first team. From there, I went on to play at Ohio State, where I achieved the following accomplishments:
4 year starter
2 year captain
2 x NCAA tournament appearance
Big Ten Champion
Senior CLASS award winner (given annually to the nation’s top student athlete in division one soccer)

A client can expect for me to be enthusiastic and motivated to make them better. I would not provide “blanket drills” for them that generically train soccer skills. Rather, I would want to know what they want to improve, and pair their requests with my evaluation of areas that can be improved.

I believe soccer is requires a pyramid approach. With fundamental abilities being the foundation of a player. Therefore, I will certainly make sure my clients are working to have a well rounded skill set (tactically/physically/technically/mentally).

How I train in each of these areas:

Tactically- in individual sessions, the tactical component being trained is decision making- providing the client with scenarios that arise in a full match.

Physically - Certainly this is age dependent, and my priority here is to ensure that have good fundamental mechanics (movement patterns, coordination) that translate to the game.

Technically - refining qualities such as first touch, passing, body positioning, etc. Often, this will arise in technical overload exercises such as repeated passing/dribbling to build good habits. For advanced players, I will introduce components of pressure as this is what often causes mistakes in games.

Mentally- understanding the client’s mindset- what holds them back as a player? Do they lack confidence? How do they respond to mistakes? Considering this component allows for me to personalize the session and ensure this is not only enhancing their visible soccer abilities, but their competitiveness and love for the game.

Client Reviews

Zach help our girls improve over the summer & it has paid off this fall. Zach is very professional and good with kids. I highly recommend Zach for improving your soccer skills.

Good work out!!!

Ben is learning so much and having fun!! Thank you!!

Coach Zach is listening to my wants as a player and adjusting our sessions accordingly. In addition, he is able to make suggestions on what I can work on alone repeatedly to help my game improve. I just booked more session with him.

Sessions with Coach Mason was great today. I look forward to many more sessions.

My son who is 9 years old needed some basic soccer skills. I scheduled a session with Coach Zach and he was absolutely amazing. He came prepared and after listening to me about my son's needs, he started working with him right away. I could clearly see an improvement in my son after 60 minutes. Most importantly, my son loved the session and now he can't wait to meet with him again.
I would strongly recommend Coach Zach.
