More About Coach Zachary

My experience is rooted in teaching and now I would like to make a transition to coaching. The sports which I have the most knowledge are soccer (played in college and played in Europe) and triathlon sports. I work best with adults (17+) who have had injuries or face physical challenges. Having received two kidney transplants, I compete in Transplant Games (Olympics for people with transplants) so I understand the special passion it takes to compete given extra challenges. I would love to work with you individually to create a training plan that fits and enhances your life. The site needs to be updated but it provides more information on my story: zacharybrooks.com.

Growing up I played basketball, volleyball, and baseball competitively. My best sport was soccer which took me to Europe that earned me a scholarship. I also raced bicycles and in the off-season at college, I ran track and field. Since 2008, I competed annually in either the US Transplant Games or World Transplant Games (over 30 medals).

My college teaching includes teaching German, film editing, computer courses (Excel), writing composition, psychology, and linguistics at UCLA, the University of Arizona, and community colleges in Los Angeles and Tucson, Arizona.

I earned a PhD from the University of Arizona in Second Language Acquisition with concentrations in cognitive science and management and I'll be enrolling in a masters program in Applied Sports Psychology at Adams State University in Colorado.

Here's what I understand: I understand the process of learning and taking your skills and applying them to your solution.

- soccer (college starter, NAIA; played in Europe with Colorado select team; Colorado Indoor soccer championship age 17; 2nd place Utah club championship age 15)
- track and field (college, NAIA; ran all distances during indoor track season, ran 10k during outdoor season briefly setting school record)
- baseball in high school and Babe Ruth (youngest on team, outfielder)
- basketball in high school (guard positions)
- volleyball in high school (back setters)
- Road cycling races (weekly criterium races and 3-day stage race)

Since 2008, I have competed in five US Transplant Games winning 30 medals (cycling, swimming, running, triathlon, volleyball) (6th will take place in August 2018), and four World Transplant Games winning 6 medals (cycling, triathlon).

My sessions are generally short (45-60 minutes) and I design my training sessions so that you progress gradually, without injury, to reach your competition goals, but just as importantly walk away from your competitions injury-free as often as possible so you can continue your training. The most frustrating aspect for any lifetime athlete is dealing with injury. While there is always a risk of injury, my goal is to reduce the risk of injury by combining core exercises (at home or the gym) with your sport of choice.
