More About Coach Wittney

I'm a former collegiate women's lacrosse player with over 20 years of playing experience, and 2 years of collegiate coaching experience.

Professionally, I've worked with college athletes ranging from 18 - 22 years. Prior to that, I coached young athletes aged 7 - 15.

After college, I coached at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. While they were a developing team, I also had the pleasure of working with some advanced athletes who needed extra guidance. This allowed me to develop coaching skills geared towards beginners and advanced athletes. In my first year coaching at Oglethorpe, we made it to the conference quarterfinals for the first time in school history!

I've also worked individually with young athletes in the northern Virginia area.

In high school, I earned the MVP award twice, and the Female Athlete of the Year award as a senior.

I also played travel lacrosse from 5th grade - 12th grade in northern Virginia, then I played at Sewanee: The University of the South in college. While at Sewanee, we played in two NCAA tournaments and I earned goals in each game (the first one as a freshman). I also earned a starting position every year.

The beginning of the session would involve warming up (a quick lap around the field and some stretching). Then, I would start with 10 - 15 minutes of stick skills. Regardless of ability or age, I think this is a key thing to the development of an athlete and pivotal to their advancement. The stick skills portion would be catered to their ability.

Then, depending on their position on the field, I would either work on specific areas in midfield, attach, or defense. For midfielders, passing and catching on the go define a player. Endurance is also very important for midfielders, so these drills would focus on conditioning as well. I also played center in college, so if a particular athlete takes the draw, I'd be able to improve those skills as well. I would also coach an attacker or midfielder through shots on goal and placement. This would involve shooting under pressure and mimicking a free position shot.

We could also defensive positioning and overall lacrosse IQ. Depending on the level, we'd either go over the defensive position and how to stick with your player, or we'd practice more advanced techniques if the athlete is already familiar. Lacrosse IQ is also very important, this would involve strategy and field placement, and how to position yourself in the best way while in a game. I'd stop and start the drill to break something down if needed.

At the end of the session, I'd try to do something fun to remind them of why they love the game!
