When I have coached in the past, I plan my sessions according to the athlete's desired areas of improvement. My philosophy has a particular focus on technique and ball control as I see these two aspects of the game as imperative that soccer players possess. This means that I usually start my sessions with ball manipulation drills. These include repetitions of scissors, step-overs, toe-taps, happy feet, Cruyff Turns, Pull-Backs, Maradonas, and juggling. I encourage athletes to practice these as much as they can on their own time as it requires just them and a ball. After these drills, I move on to more active drills that involve passing and moving off the ball. I am constantly talking and giving the athletes instructions on what they have done right and what they can improve on. As a coach, I believe that stopping the session and telling the athlete where he/she has gone wrong is the most effective way to improve. Practice doesn't make perfect; perfect practice makes perfect. Finally, I transition my session to shooting drills and activities where the player is attacking at goal. In the final third of the field is where players can take their level from good to great. I create drills that mirror almost any situation a player can find him/herself on the field so that they are well-conditioned for when they arrive there in the game. With the proper technique, vision, and athleticism that I coach, my sessions make my athletes some of the most dangerous players to play against in games.
