More About Coach Serena

I have a bachelor’s degree in Sports Science and Performance Programming from Arizona State University and will be a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach through the NSCA within the next two months. In the past 4 years I have taken courses that focus on multiple aspects of training athletes such as, sports physiology, sports nutrition, and multiple courses on resistance training, plyometrics, and conditioning. This has prepared me to create training programs for all types of athletes with different goals such as increasing speed, endurance, strength, power, and muscle size.
I currently have 1 year of experience with training youth athletes ages 5-10. Working with youth athletes poses the challenge of keeping them engaged by having fun with our workouts. This age group has also made me realize the importance of building a strong foundation of movement patterns in an athlete. Some results I have achieved with these athletes are increased neuromuscular (mind-body) control, increase muscle size, increased strength and power, and most importantly an increased desire to want to become a better athlete. I am also working with the ASU Women's soccer team to aid the coaches in planning out what training load the athletes need in order to improve performance and avoid injury. This has given me inside knowledge on the physical demands of a division 1 women's collegiate soccer player, and the way their training sessions are designed.

During my athletic career I played soccer for about 15 years on both club teams and school teams. I also competed in track and field during high school, the events I ran were the 200m, 400m, and 800m. The event I was best at was the 400m run, earing the school record which I still hold, and making it to the Pennsylvania State championships for both indoor and outdoor track and field. Now, I take part in my own training programs in order to test new strategies and ensure that the programs I create accomplish their goal. I have had success in increasing muscle size, strength, and power within myself as well as my athletes. Doing CrossFit for a couple of years also taught me how to perform many Olympic lifts (snatch, clean, etc.) and how to progress to those movements.

To begin we will establish your personal goals and then I will conduct multiple tests such as force velocity profile, lower body power, upper body power, 1RM tests, and linear speed. Using the results from these tests and your goals I will then create a personalized resistance training and/or conditioning program to fit your needs. Programs can range from months to years and will supplement regular practices to improve performance. I would prefer to run sessions in person but if you would prefer to do the workouts on your own that can be arranged as well. Sessions will last about 1 to 1.5 hours in duration and may be indoors or outdoors depending on what facilities are open to the public and near you. I also offer nutrition planning for athletes that will aid gains in performance during our training.
