More About Coach Sarah
Since I was five years old, I have been a competitive athlete. Since the age of fourteen, I have been both an athlete and a coach. I started out coaching a traveling track and field team. My coaching specialties are sprints, hurdles and all of the jumping events. My athletes ranged from five to fifteen years old. Then I entered high school, placing at states in every event I competed in, even taking the state title a few times. After my freshman year, my coach had me helping him coach sprints, hurdles and jumps for my remaining three years. At the beginning of my sophomore year of high school, I received my first recruiting letter. Sophomore year through the first quarter of senior year, I was communicating with a collegiate coach daily. After much traveling and decision making, I signed with Belmont University. My four years as a collegiate athlete were mostly heartache due to a torn hamstring but I managed to place at the Ohio Valley Conference in the pentathlon and set my school record. Besides taking down Belmont's school record, my most memorable time competing as a collegiate athlete was becoming Belmont's team captain. During that time, I led and coached my team. Whenever my coach was working with sprints, I would be working with jumps and vice-versa. It was a great time. I also became a certified personal trainer a few years ago which allowed me to work with athletes (and non-athletes) on and off the track. Now, I am a Certified USA Track and Field Coach and USTFCCCA Jumps Specialist. I know how to coach technique, skill and conditioning.
My high school athletic accomplishments consisted of winning states in long jump, placing top three in triple jump, high jump and sprinting events every year, being named all-county and all-regional, and my team winning the state title four times in a row. I then competed at a D1 college, Belmont University. I placed at conference in the pentathlon, claimed the school record was named captain. Oh and I thought high jumping higher than my height was pretty cool too.
I begin my sessions with a warm-up that not only gets the blood flowing and the muscles warm, but one that incorporates technique. The drills and stretches that make up the warm-up advances the athletes running performance by teaching proper running mechanics. After the warm-up, I take the athlete through drills pertaining to the event. For example, if we were working on long jump, I would have the athlete start off with an easy five step approach working on pop-ups. No matter how advanced of a long jumper the athlete is, pop-ups and five-step approaches are a must. These drills warm-up the body for jumping and allows the body to understand proper technique. It is nearly impossible to learn correct mechanics from a full approach, going 100%. After the athlete makes progress and feels good about their work, I will lead the jumper through a light conditioning routine focusing on explosive movements. Lastly, I lead the athlete through a proper cool-down to prevent lactate buildup and soreness. I never let an athlete leave my session feeling poorly or frustrated about their performance, we will always end on a positive note!
