More About Coach Samuel

I have been a runner since my first year in high school, 2008, and it continues to be my passion. Currently I am a distance coach for the Midland Public Middle Schools, however during the off season I also coach high school athletes. I have coached beginner athletes as well as elite high school athletes. These athletes run anything from an 8:00 mile, to a 4:50 mile, a 30 minute 5k, to a 17 minute 5k.

While I have the most experience working with youth, I am willing and able to work with runners of all ages whether it's for fun, competition, or health.

My college minor is in Athletic Coaching, I have Coaching Certifications through RRCA and USATF, and am currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Sport and Recreation Science.

I ran for H.H. Dow High School and have also competed in a variety of independent 5ks when I can. While in high school, I ran an average of 40 miles per week and roughly 60 during the summer. My junior and senior year I was fast enough to be all-county varsity running sub 18:00 5ks for cross country. My high school awarded me with a college scholarship due to not only my achievements and work ethic, but also for how well I worked with the rest of the team. I earned my first varsity letter my sophomore year in high school and never fell off the list.
I did not run while I was at college, but my proudest accomplishments have been running 16:40 for a 5k, 51.2 seconds in the 400m, and a 4:40 for the 1600m.

1. Debrief: goals, current health, time frame, and getting acquainted.
2. Warm up drills: dynamic drills that not only loosen muscles and prepare the body for exercise but also to teach and enhance running form.
3. The workout: Based off of prior experience and current fitness we will determine what to do and get a feel for running.
4. Core work: Different exercises to strengthen essential muscles to help prevent injury and improve performance.
5. Stretching: A mix of independent and assisted stretches to help relieve muscle tension and reduce risk of injury.
6. Post-Session Talk: Formulate a plan for the week and set up a future session.
