More About Coach Rachel

While I was in college and law school I conducted private pitching, hitting, and fielding lessons to several athletes in the Youngstown-Warren area ranging in ages from 8-15. Given that I was a student, and now a full time attorney, I have not sought out any jobs as a team coach, and have turned down any such opportunities given my time constraints.

In addition to winning other, smaller tournaments, I won a PONY National Championship title in 2007 with my team, the Valley Extreme Red. The year before we tied for 9th. During our 2007 run, of the 10 games we played I pitched 8 and 2/3 of them. In high school I was 4 years All Conference, 3 years All District, and 2 years All State. I received numerous offers to play at Division 1, 2 and 3 schools, however, given my mother's cancer diagnosis my senior year of high school I chose to attend John Carroll University. I was on the team my first semester, but suffered a tear to my Achilles and decided to end my career rather than undergo surgery.

As a coach I focus on the fundamentals. The reason I was so consistent and effective as a pitcher was because I knew my mechanics inside and out. When something went wrong on the mound, I was able to take a step back and make the corrections I needed to make in real time because I could tell what I was doing wrong by how the ball moved or my body felt. I start off making sure any pitcher I work with understands how important the little things are to the overall picture. To do that, I begin with a drill where they flip the ball to themselves up in the air, then to their catcher, and then have them work backwards until they reach the mound doing drills that increase the backswing incrementally until they work up to a full circle motion. I liken this to seconds and minutes on a clock and explain, especially to younger athletes, how you can't get to an hour until you add up the seconds and minutes. From there, if the pitcher's mechanics are good and she is hitting the target, I work on timing drills that help pitchers get the feel for the full pitching motion with a backswing and work on how foot placement when they push off can influence the location of the pitch. Once pitchers have these drills down, I work with them on full pitching and learning different pitches. I always like to incorporate real-game scenarios as well, so I have them work on getting into fielding position after they release the pitch and doing pitch sequences to certain batters when they are ready. Also, for some athletes I have provided hitting, throwing, and fielding instruction in addition to pitching lessons.
