More About Coach Paul

I am the current head coach for Glen Ridge High school’s winter and spring track & field teams and head cross country coach at Harrison High School. I am also the track coach for North Jersey Masters Track & Field Club, and head coach of Essex Running Club in Montclair, NJ. I previously served as head coach for the Glen Ridge recreation track & field team. I work with ages varying from teens to adult masters (40+) runners. As a public school employee I have all the certifications to coach and teach in the State of NJ. I am a certified USATF coach, certified NFHS coach, and Red Cross CPR & AED certified. In my second year as the head coach of Harrison's XC program both my boys and girls teams advanced to the state group meet ending a 31 year losing streak. I have coached conference, county, state sectional, and state group champions and have had athletes medal at the NJ state Meet of Champions. My middle school track athletes have gone on to win division titles, and I have helped numerous adult runners qualify for the Boston Marathon and set PR's in races varying in length from 800m through the Marathon.

I began running in 1994 where I was a top league and county athlete specializing in Cross Country, 1600m and 800m. After a little time away from running post high school, I fell in love with racing longer distances in my 20's and have completed hundreds of races across the country including 11 Marathons, 7 consecutive Boston Marathon finishes, where I have finished at or below the 3 hour mark 6 times (PR of 2:52 in 2016-top 2% of field and 10th NJ finisher). Finished 14 half marathons (PR of 1:18 set in 3/2017), and over 45 5K's (PR of 17:10 set in 6/2016), several triathlons up to the Half Ironman distance, and competed in the men's elite division of the Empire State Building run up!

I do not believe in a "cookie cutter/one size fits all" approach to coaching. I sit down with each client and we discuss YOUR goals. Some people naturally love the track, the open roads, or even the trails. I can meet you at an agreed upon location and will even run with you for proper pacing (or if you prefer to go alone that is fine with me too). Sessions can be long runs, hills, track workouts, or even full body strengthening. Whether you are looking to complete your fastest Boston Marathon or PR your next 800, I can help you achieve your goals.

Excellent coach!! High recommend.

Coach Paul is a good coach that helps with fundamentals and your underlying motivations for why you want to succeed.

I would recommend Coach Paul.

Excellent coach. Has me working on a bunch of drills to increase body awareness. Do not hesitate to book with him.

Coach Paul is great! He really knows his stuff and is great to work with

Coach Paul is a wonderful coach! I find his individualized approach extremely helpful in my daughter's effort to reach her running goals. He pays attention to her form and how she can optimize to reach her running time goals. I highly recommend Coach Paul to anyone who is seeking ways to improve their running.

Great session.

At the recommendation of a friend, I booked Coach Paul to help me train for the NYC Marathon, my first. I am a self taught runner, but could use the help and discipline of a coach to help me properly train so I can get the most out of the experience.

I have only had 3 session so far with Coach Paul, but so far I am enjoying the workouts. He is knowledgable about the sport and I look forward to my weekly sessions with him. I would highly recommend booking him if you need/or want to push yourself.

As a self taught runner, I needed to get some advice from someone who knew exactly what they were doing. Coach Paul is very informative on everything from warm ups to cool downs and static/dynamic stretching. He just doesn't let you get out there and run without first advising you of the benefits of warming up and cooling down. I felt very comfortable during my training sessions and got extra push when. I needed it. I will be booking more sessions in the future.

Definitely knowledgeable and works with you at whatever level and Pace you may need. From warm up to cool down and everything in between coach Paul shows his expertise and understanding of where you're at verses where you need to go based on your goals. I definitely recommend him at any levels from novice to expert.

Had a great first session. Very knowledgeable and insists on giving you a good foundation. Positive and thorough. Looking forward to future quality sessions.

Had just one session but looking forward to the next! Coach Paul started with a review of dynamic and post-run stretching techniques, both of which I hadn't previously incorporated into my running program. I was glad to have a review of the basics before we go further into running itself. Coach Paul was very knowledgeable and an approachable person.

I am currently working on passing my police physical assessment and Coach Paul is just the right Coach to help me succeed. I will be booking many more sessions with him for the future!

One year ago, with very little running experience to speak of, I decided to run the NYC Marathon in 2016. In January 2016, I began training with Coach Paul and with his exceptional talent and commitment, I had an incredible race day yesterday, Nov 6th! My race time was fantastic but more important than that, I was well prepared and well trained. From my first training session with Coach Paul and all the way through, he very thoughtfully listened to the things that concerned me (48 years old and fearful of getting hurt!) and prepared a training schedule that ensured I would achieve my goal successfully and with confidence. Paul focused on every element of training - - my gait, my endurance, my speed, my core strength, my diet - - and taught me how to properly train from pre-workout stretches and drills to post-workout cool downs. He pushed me hard but listened when I needed to step back, he built my confidence up as a runner and supported me the whole way with kindness, thoughtfulness and a full commitment to my cause. Paul is an amazing coach, truly the best, and I am beyond grateful to him for getting me to the finish line!

Coach Paul knows what he is doing and imparts the message in a courteous and professional manner. He is helping me immensely.

Paul is an excellent coach!!!
He's pushing me just enough outside of my comfort zone to help me realize that this running thing isn't so bad. I know without his help and encouragement I wouldn't have had the courage to register for a 5K so early in the season. Thanks for all your help. Looking forward to our next session.

Coach is working with my high schooler to increase his speed and explosiveness as a football player. My son really likes the session and feels like Paul communicates well and is going to bring his game to another level. Highly recommended.

Coach PK is great. I had never worked with a coach or personal trainer, and he quickly made me feel comfortable. He's taught me stretches and drills and is working with me to help me increase my speed and confidence. I highly recommended him.

Coach Paul is great!

I quickly felt comfortable with Coach Paul. He took the time to listen to all my goals and concerns and I feel very confident that he will be able to help me meet my goals. Very much looking forward to future sessions.

First let me start by saying that I am happy i stumbled upon this website. Coach Paul was very knowledgable of the sport of running, he took his time with me and showed me running techniques that will help me improve my running skills. Most of all coach Paul is was very patient with me. I have already recommended coach Paul to my friends.

Patient, thorough and knowledgable.

Coach Paul was great to work with, he really focused on what your ultimate goals are. I would definitely recommend him to anyone.

I don't really write reviews, but I also feel the need to tell anyone looking for a running coach - about Coach Paul. I began running several months ago with a very specific goal in mind. I would run every other day and sometimes every 2 or 3 days. I would find people to run with, but they would only slack behind and I began to hit a plateau. With my one specific goal in mind, I knew I would not reach it if I were to stay on the same course as I was on. So, I reached out to Coach Paul and within minutes we were chatting about my goals and how he could help me achieve them. What we spoke about over CoachUp, Coach Paul has most definitely kept his word. He is always there before me and keeps me late until I complete what needs to be completed. I am not one for homework, but the running homework that he gives me helps me become faster for my next sessions. My biggest problem of becoming winded and tiring easily has dramatically decreased since I began running with Coach Paul. If I ever need running advice, I know I can contact him and he will promptly contact me back with words of wisdom. Needless to say, I have already completed 5 sessions with Coach Paul and have just booked 5 more. My time and speed have improved dramatically and I only look forward to getting faster and stronger in my running. I definitely would recommend Coach Paul to anyone who is looking to improve their running.

Coach Paul is a phenomenal teacher/coach/runner. He's so passionate about what he does. He encourages you every step of the way . Not only does he run with you but he teaches you warm ups & new things to enhance your performance . Learned a lot from him & he always ready to answer any question you might have . Definitely someone you can trust immediately to help you become a better runner. This guy knows what he's talking about . Thanks for all the help!

So glad to work with Coach PK! He's helped me so much with learning about the benefits of warming up, pacing myself, and fixing my running technique. Very knowledgable and he goes at a steady pace, so it doesn't feel too overwhelming to a novice runner.

My first of many sessions I will book with Coach PK!!! Coach PK is great! He instructed me on how to warm up, what are and how to do dynamic stretches between laps and ran beside me but asked me first if I preferred running alone or with him. He showed me some great stretches and form for my arms. He kept track of how many miles we did-my first two! He again asked me what my goals were and made suggestions and gave me great feedback. Wow!! I have homework for the week until we meet for my second session next weekend. Thank you Coach PK! I am looking forward to continue working with you again and make my lifelong dream of running a reality! I can't wait to run my first 5K in the Fall! It was great meeting you!

I have only had 2 sessions with Coach PK and am amazed at see how much I have learned already from him!! As someone who has taken a several year break from running and just started back in April, he really is helping me get back on my pace! I am eager to continue working with him and look forward to his help in achieving my goal of completing my 1st Half Marathon!! I strongly recommend Coach PK if you are a beginning runner or have been running for years! He will help you fine tune your pace! Dr. Donna P.

Coach PK was my Cross Country coach in high school. He is a very passionate coach who has helped every single member of my team improve their time, technique, and stay in shape. He knows how to win races and helped our XC team win several medals. I am glad that he was our coach and couldn't ask for a better person. On a more personal note, Coach believed in my talents throughout the season and never gave up on me. He pushed me every single practice and cheered at the top of his lungs during races. He is also a very friendly and funny guy!
I like Coach PK. I think he is honest, fair, and knowledgeable...and of course I appreciate his spry sense of humor.
Coach PK is great! He was our cross country coach during my Senior year of high school, and has brought out massive improvements from within every runner on the team. His specialized training routines are always intense but at the same time designed with the athlete in mind. Coach is always willing to work with us, and adjusts his workout levels to always keep us ready for the next day. All in all, he is a great running buddy and mentor, who has a serious, but also jovial sense of humor.
I’ve run with Paul, who we affectionately call PK, for almost 10 years. You’ll never find a person more dedicated to the sport of running. Whether it’s pushing team members, encouraging his high school team, or running for himself, Paul is a true professional. A multiple Boston Marathon qualifier, PK knows what it takes to get the best from his charges.
