More About Coach Odera

For two and half years, I was a manager for the North Carolina Tar Heels Women's Basketball team. I have worked as a camp counselor for New York Gauchos Basketball, a basketball instructor for Fastbreak Sports and a recreation assistant for Dyckman Basketball. I was also the Head Girls Varsity basketball coach at the Academy of Mount St. Ursula High School.

I was voted Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2009 and 2011 while playing for the Academy of Mount St. Ursula High School. Due to my stellar performance as a team manager, the UNC women's basketball coaching staff honored me as a "Guest Basketball Coach." During my time as a manager, my team made it to the Elite 8 (2013 - 2014) and Sweet 16 (2014 - 2015) of the NCAA Tournament.

All my workouts are personalized for the individual athlete. I focus on four major areas: dribbling, shooting, passing and offense/defense. We work on footwork - moving your feet is necessary to play good defense. I make sure that all my athletes do each drill multiple times until they have a clear understanding. Repetition is key in helping increase your basketball IQ. After working on footwork, we will do a dribbling drill. One of my favorites is two ball dribbling. I want all my athletes to know how to play with both hands. I like to incorporate my passing drills into my shooting drills. For instance, I may have a player start at the right wing of the 3-pt line pass me the ball at the top of the key then sprint straight to the basket as I pass them the ball for a lay-up. I focus on improvement not perfection. My sessions are fun and intense.

I had the privilege of being Odera’s basketball coach while she was a student at AMSU. I believe that you can tell a lot about a person in the way that they handle themselves on the basketball court. Odera was always extremely poised, hard-working, and a natural born leader. She was the type of student-athlete that a coach dreams of coaching. Odera took constructive criticism well, looked out for her teammates, and lead by example both on and off the court. It was only fitting that she was voted captain of the basketball team her senior year and she took on the role in typical Odera style.
