More About Coach Mitchell
Ever since joining the athletic community at the age of 4 I have always wanted to give back. I started my coaching career in high school with my best friend by taking on a middle school basketball team and have been obsessed with the way we bonded with our team. The majority of my coaching life has been involved with lacrosse. I have been an assistant coach on 2 summer travel teams and a few youth clinics in Colorado Springs, Co, and I have also been involved in 3 annual youth clinics in Philadelphia, PA. Arguably my most inspiring work was working individually with aspiring lacrosse goalies in my local communities to help them grow into star athletes.
I was a 3x starter in goal for my high school lacrosse team in Philadelphia, PA where I was named the teams most improved player my junior season and then team captain and MVP my senior season. Away from my high school team I was also named to the Philly Showcase Fab 40 All-Star team and was invited to compete in the Nike Blue Chip camp. From high school I earned a lacrosse scholarship to the Air Force Academy where I was on varsity all 4 years, and earned the starting goalie possession my senior year, leading the team to a Conference Championship and NCAA National Tournament playoff birth. My senior year I was awarded to the Southern Conference All-Tournament team and won the teams Unsung Hero Award.
The session would consist of 4 parts.
1. Stretch. Flexibility and warm muscles and so important for a goalie and helps to cover more of the cage.
2. Hand Eye Coordination Drills. This is where we really hone in on developing fast twitch muscles by diversifying our reaction drills.
3. Shooting Warm-Up. As most goalies know, you need to take slow and accurate shots before going full speed. A good warm-up sets the stage for a strong performance.
4. Body Positioning w/ Shots. Now we are full speed and in full teaching mode. The eyes are ready to take on fast shots and mind is ready to be taught. Positioning is SO important for successful goal tending and every goalie has there own style to be corrected and adjusted.
