More About Coach Mike

As an avid runner and cyclist for more than 40 years, I have had the opportunity to coach at many levels. Recently, I retired from serving as the Head Coach for cross country (boys/girls) and track and field (boys/girls) at at Althoff Catholic High School. Some of those other opportunities included coaching at McKendree University, a NCAA Division II college, for cross country and track, youth clubs, middle/high school homeschooled teams, collegiate clubs, and individual one-on-one athletes...each one bringing an element of success!

Not only have I been coaching for a long period of time, but I also served as a Personal Fitness Training Instructor at Vatterott College in which I taught Anatomy, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Sports Psychology, Wellness, and Nutrition.

Just as well, in my 23+ years of military service, I have served as the Unit Fitness Program Manager and Physical Training Leader at most of the units I was assigned to in which I was responsible for ensuring military members were fit for duty...largest unit had more than 400 personnel! Additionally, I was appointed as the Assistant Commandant of Cadets for the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) at the University of Portland in Portland, Oregon and served as the Physical Fitness Advisor for more than 200 cadets. What does that mean to you? I’ve got the passion and knowledge to guide you to success, plus I have the ability to motivate and can inspire you to greater performance!

But that’s not all, as I have the competence and capability to perform the tasks at hand. I have earned a Masters Degree in Sports Management and possess multiple certifications; Professional Manager Certification, USA Track and Field (USATF) Level I Coaching Certification, and US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches (USTFCCCA) Higher Coaches Track & Field Certification which includes Technical Training and Professional Management certifications. Same question, what does that mean to you? I know the business of health and fitness so I’m fully capable of interacting with the programs needed for you to succeed. Additionally, I have worked with Fitness Centers and Health and Wellness Centers by instructing and leading Running Clinics. Finally, I often public speak on fitness at Professional Military Education Centers, schools, hospitals, and private organizations motivating many to get out there and do something!

With that said, I would like to share with you that running and fitness training have many components to take you to a different level. My typical session starts off with a light warmup, then some dynamic warming, followed by the particular stage of performance exercises and development that I want to take you through. This could be steady state running, intervals, tempo runs, progressive runs, or recovery. We may also work on muscular elements either in strength, endurance, or power and could follow up with flexibility enhancement. I believe that after each session, my athlete will know they have accomplished something significant and that either sustainment or improvement of performance is present!

Mike comes prepared, on time and provides tailored instruction. He will work with you on location and schedule. My daughter goes to him for sprinting and he’s been very good at providing encouragement and constructive feedback. Would highly recommend! A+++

Great coach, very knowledgeable and works great with kids

Amazing running coach! Mike reliably provides me weekly online training plans that are doable/realistic. In less than 3 months with his frequent guidance and encouragement, I’ve gained confidence and improved running-- reduced 5K time close to 3 minutes and 1-½ mile military fitness time over one minute! Looking forward to his continued guidance to train for a half marathon next. Impressive expertise and enjoyable to work with.

Coach Mike is very knowledgeable and deals very well with young athletes (12 years old). My son is learning a lot about stretching and drills for sprinters.

I would recommend him for helping athletes increase their understanding of the science of running and how the body works together to propel you down the track.

Coach Mike had great feedback, and was very encouraging! His use of video review made it easy to break down form and stride improvements, and he clearly brought years of expertise to the table.

Mike is a great coach!! He works with me every week doing interval training/speed work. He helped me improve my 5k time and I’m currently training with him for a 10k.

Great coach! Helped me learn a lot about my own running and athletic style

Coach Mike Sanders is one of the biggest reasons of why I’m running today. I currently run on scholarship at Eastern Illinois University (EIU) in both cross-country and track. However, I wouldn’t have been noticed by EIU if it weren’t for Coach Sanders. I was fortunate to have met Coach Sanders (as my next door neighbor) while I was in middle school, and even more fortunate to have had him as the head cross-country coach for my senior year of high school. My senior year of cross-country was filled with much success due to Coach Sanders’ training. We trained, rain or shine. We had speed days and long runs. There wasn’t a practice that went by that wasn’t purposeful. Coach Sanders taught us what running really was. Of course, we all knew the running basics, but he went deeper. By the end of the season, I knew what anaerobic, aerobic, fartlek, tempo, threshold, and other running vocabulary really meant. He developed our cores and introduced us to hurdles. I was able to succeed my senior year because I believed in his process and I believed in his coaching. Coach Sanders and I always talked about me being impatient…I wanted results right away. However, that’s not realistic. He always made me see the main goal, which for me was the IHSA 1A State Final. My overall experience with Coach Sanders training was nothing short of life changing. He developed me into the runner I am today. However, Coach Sanders’ coaching didn’t stop at just the physical aspect of running. He developed the team my senior year into a family, all with a common goal. He became much more than a coach to all of us but also a friend and a motivator. Coach Sanders is still someone I can talk to about anything, and certainly the first person I ask when I need running advice.
