More About Coach Mike

I started my coaching/training career in 2007 at Children's Aid Society East Harlem center. I coached/trained student athletes from ages 5 to 18 years old. I coached and won many NYC tournaments all through the five boroughs of New York. I helped student athletes make and stay on their Junior high school and high school basketball teams which led to some of my players moving on to play college basketball. After moving on from East Harlem C.A.S in 2011, I studied and became a certified New York state IABO Men's High School basketball referee in 2012. I currently referee men's and women's basketball throughout the Tri-state area and AAU tournaments in North Carolina. In 2013 I coached with the Riverbank Running Rebels, running individual, small group and team training sessions for all divisions of the Running Rebels AAU program. I also ran a weekly four hour Saturday beginners basketball camp for young student athletes to teach them the basics but also how to enjoy the game of basketball. Not to include the individual and group workout sessions done on my free time in the communities of NYC from 2005 to present.

I received a scholarship to attend St. Rays High School for boys in the Bronx, NY. There, I played my first year on the freshman team and was ranked fifteenth best freshman in NY by Tom Konchalski in 1994. In 1995, I was moved up to varsity and came off the bench as a back up point guard. In 1996, I moved on to Manhattan center where I played my final 2 years of Men's High School basketball and received scholarship offers from around the country. I then attended the Division 1 basketball program Global Institute of Technology (G.I.T.) where my team and I were featured in the SLAM Magazine in 2000 as a team to watch out for. After playing one year, I moved on to Shaw University where I won the 2002 CIAA Men's basketball slam dunk contest. From 2003 to 2005, I played point guard for the Shaw University Men's basketball team ending my session and career with a knee injury that led me to fall back on my academics and start my coaching/training career.

My training sessions are built around developing a player's mindset then their athletic ability. Giving players the mental tools to make the necessary adjustments on and off the court to succeed. Sessions will be a hour to a hour and a half. First three sessions will just be a basic skill assessment to see what level the player or players are on. Sessions begin with stretching and warm up drills (basic ball handling, passing and shooting). After this players will work on defense, rebounding, and hustle plays and finish with game situation drills broken down in 3 segments.

Client Reviews

Coach Mike is a great teacher and role model. He helped me understand how to approach the game of basketball as a student athlete and showed me how to make the best of every opportunity on the court. I'm looking forward to working out again with him soon.
