More About Coach Michele

I have been coaching basketball at various levels for 23 years. I have 8 years of coaching experience at the Girls' Basketball Varsity High School level. My first 4 years in this position was as the head coach from 1995-99 at St.Pius X High School in Pottstown, PA. We worked hard and managed to make it to the Final Four in the PAC 10 league all 4 years that I was at the helm. We also made it to the Championship game one year ( 1996) and won the PIAA District 1 AA Girls Basketball Championship in 1999. I was also named Coach of the Year in 1996 as a first year head varsity coach. We also qualified for district playoffs each year and for states in 1999. My other 4 years at the Varsity level was at Phoenixville Area Highschool in Phoenixville, PA and was from 2009-2013. In this position we did make it to the PAC 10 Final Four each year and we did qualify for District playoffs each of the 4 years that I was the head coach. I was also the Middle School Head Girls' basketball at Phoenixville Area Middle School from 2005-09. In this position , we had winning seasons each year as the development of fundamentals was emphasized and basic defensive strategies were learned and executed. In the 2009 season we had a fabulous 11-2 record that was memorable. I also have experience in the boys basketball world , as I was a volunteer varsity assistant coach for the Phoenixville Area Highschool Boys' program in 1999 and 2000. Additionally , I have 5 years of girls' basketball coaching experience at the AAU level. I began a phenomenal, developmental coaching experience when I started coaching for the Philadelphia Belles AAU program( 1990-95) , an Elite AAU program ( that I played for as well). This program is established and reputable in the basketball world on the East coast as well as throughout the US and was a "best move" for me as a coach seeking experience and opportunity. I had an outstanding career with the Belles as I chose to stay with my team and "move up" as they "moved up" each year, so as to create consistency, bonding and growth as a team. The concept and efforts paid off well as our accolades are summarized here: 1995 14u AAU Nationals - Sweet 16 Finalist ( Indianapolis, IN), 1994 13u AAU National Championship - 2nd place/ Silver Medal ( Kenner, LA),1994 13u Bantam Division Winner at USJN ( Baltimore, Md), 1994 13u ( played UP) participant in elite, nationally recognized Boo Williams Tournament ( Fairfax,VA), 1993- 12u AAU Nationals 7th place finish( Hartfod, CT). Along the way, each of these teams played in and/or won the Mid Atlantic AAU championships and won various tournaments throughout the region each season. I began coaching right out of college and served as a volunteer assistant Girls' Varsity coach at St. Pius X Highschool , Pottstown , PA from 1988-90. While on staff, we made it to the PAC 8 or PAC 10 playoffs both years and we won the PIAA District 1 AA Title in 1990. Additionally, I have organized, counseled, or been a director of multiple camps and clinics in the Pottstown/ Phoenixville area for the last 20 years as well as providing 1:1 training for aspiring female players.

I played at the High School level for 4 years and was the starting point guard for 3 of those years as well as a captain my senior year. I played at the Div. III level at Elizabethtown College and Ursinus College and it was there that I discovered my true passion to be a coach.

A client can expect me to first focus on ballhandling skills because every player needs to have a good handle, strong hands and confidence with the ball, Tall or small in stature. I warm up with static ballhandling drills to get the blood flowing and warm up the muscles ( even the legs and glutes as some drills are done in a low , athletic stance). I then proceed to dynamic dribbling that involves 2 balls and half court movement and /or full court options in which the player "dances with the ball" as I say and works on a variety of dribbles and creating "combinations " in the open court. I usually work on shot form and shooting in the close range next , or I jump into a 1:1 move ( the circle for guards, the drop step with and without the power dribble for post players). I then get into "getting open" for a shot and ways to create space. As most players seek to improve their offensive game that is what I focus on, initially and then I get more into "reading the defense", dictating the offense from a defensive viewpoint, having a mental edge on the opponent by teaching players how to analyze and opponent, what to look for and at...I also address key points about V-Cuts, L-cuts, playing defense with your feet first, the relevance of foot positioning in the game, the use of the body, the shoulders in order to get to the rim , make contact...I also end a lesson on a positive such as make 3 shots in a row , nothing but net, or with eyes closed, or 1 handed...something challenging for them, yet feasible.
Video clips are the norm for my lessons as players "see" and learn on the spot with a skill, a drill , a concept. I also am open and willing to "shoot" footage of your daughter in "live" game play in order to utilize the film as a tool to learn, to develop and to adjust workouts accordingly!

Coach Michelle is AMAZING!! My son is newer to the sport, and she was so patient and understanding with him!! You could see his skills start to improve right away! He enjoyed his time with her, and is looking forward to his next sessions!!

Coach Michele was really helpful and understood what my daughter needed. At the end of her first session she was already seeing herself doing better then the start. She’s encouraging and let my daughter learn at a pace comfortable to her. Definitely recommend her to any athlete aspiring to do better.

Wonderful experience

Coach Michele is a great coach who definitely knows her stuff! I learned a lot in just the first session and have drills to work on in between sessions. I know I will be more confident in my game come basketball season with coach's help.

Coach Michelle is awesome. She is very patient; and definitely knows basketball. In only one session she was able to assess both my kids; teach them a number of drills they can use to improve their basics and become better players.

I can't wait to see how much more they will learn in the upcoming sessions we have scheduled.

Michele did a great job with my Daughter, just in the one lesson she learned so much. We are looking forward to continuing to work with her!

My 11 year old daughter is lacking confidence and ball handling skills and after just one session with Michele, I've seen a difference in her overall attitude. She was "embarrassed" to get one-on-one instruction but at the end of her first session, she asked if she could do it again. Michele made her feel very comfortable and although they had to share a crowded gym, she found a way to keep her focused! I'm looking forward to session #2!

Coach Michelle is great with my daughter! She is patient and passionate about coaching and the game.

Michele Dunleavy, as a coach and mentor, has been instrumental in the development of a balanced competitive mindset that has aided me personally, athletically, and professionally. Grit and problem solving have a place in both menial tasks and big picture perspective, yet passion and integrity are solidified in the search to both define and pursue success. Self and situational awareness are developed with every step forward, whether the outcome meets one's initial goals or acts as a source of critical evaluation, turning each experience into a practice of calibration, both inside and out. Kate Casaday-student/athlete/mentee Varsity Womens' Basketball 2010-2014 Coach Repko/Dunleavy coached me for my senior of HS basketball and has served as a mentor and friend over the past 15 years of my life. She has been a constant sounding board as I have progressed in my career. She has been a resource for me to managing stress both professionally and personally. Her passion and knowledge in the areas of mentoring, educating and managing stress has been valuable and beneficial in my life and will be in the lives of others.
